Dear ,

Town Meeting Day is almost here! The first Tuesday in March is Vermont's Town Meeting Day and on Tuesday, March 5, Vermonters will gather to discuss, debate and celebrate their town's future.
The day is perfectly positioned mid-winter, just when we all have a touch of cabin fever and need to get out and socialize a bit! Town meeting offers residents the chance to voice their opinions about the business of their towns, vote on various issues including the budget, and elect our municipal officials. By Vermont law, only residents can vote, but second home and vacation property owners are always welcome.
Although most towns hold the meeting on Tuesday, my town of Landgrove chooses to meet on the Monday night before as we think that encourages better attendance and more participation. A potluck dinner follows and it's always nice to catch up with neighbors.

Town Vermont's Meeting Day is one of the last vestiges of a true democratic (small d!) tradition and it's a joy and a privilege to participate. Make sure you try to attend your town's event this year ... and always.

Be well and keep in touch.

Nature Conservancy Raising Funds to Purchase and Protect Glebe Mountain

In real estate we often talk about "location location location" and in our little corner of southern Vermont, one of the major reasons this area is so cherished is that we are tucked away amid some of the State's most beautiful natural areas. There are thousands and thousands of acres of State and National forest nearby, but there are also thousands of acres of privately owned land. These large, undeveloped tracts are home to mountains, river valleys and all that make Vermont so special.
One such natural area that can be seen from almost anywhere in the Mountain Towns of Londonderry, Windham, Weston, Peru and Landgrove is the view towards Glebe Mountain, better known as the home of Magic Mountain Ski Area. We are incredibly lucky to have this special area in our backyard and it is land worth protecting!
The Nature Conservancy is in the process of raising funds to purchase and protect a 3,500-acre parcel known as the Glebe Parcel. According to the Nature Conservancy, "The Glebe parcel, spanning the towns of Londonderry and Windham, encompasses an array of geologic settings that will support a diverse richness of wildlife and plant species. The reality is that there are not many remaining opportunities in Vermont to protect large, forested blocks-making these projects only more urgent."
Their goal is to allow the public to, "...once again be able to roam the property's hills on a summer hike or winter snowshoe, fish its streams and hunt for deer in the fall. Clean water will flow through Cobb Brook and over Hamilton Falls, a local treasure just down-stream from Glebe Mountain. The ridgeline will be protected from development and the forested landscape will capture carbon and allow species to move as they adapt to climate change. Let's send a message to future generations telling them we care about forests, water and warblers."
Please join Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate in making a contribution to the Nature Conservancy dedicated to the preservation of this important piece of Vermont.

Weston Playhouse Announces 2019
Weston-Ghostlight New Musical Award Winner
The writing team of Jenny Giering (music), Adam Gwon (lyrics) and Karen Hartman have won the 13th Annual Weston-Ghostlight New Musical Award for their new musical, ALICE BLISS.
The only award of its kind in the country, the Weston-Ghostlight New Musical Award brings the creators of a promising new project together with a small ensemble of actors to rehearse, perform, and record selections from the winning score in Weston, in New York, and in the studio with Grammy winner Kurt Deutsch of Ghostlight Records.
Nominated by Kathy Evans of Rhinebeck Writers Retreat, ALICE BLISS is based on Laura Harrington's acclaimed novel. It follows Alice, a young teenager whose father is deployed to Iraq, as she navigates the challenges of growing up in a family touched by the effects of war. This musical tells the story of the family left behind and the cost of war to those who are not on the front lines.
"With ALICE BLISS," says Executive Artistic Director Susanna Gellert, "Giering, Gwon, and Hartman have created a beautiful study of the American family. Not only is ALICE BLISS a stunning and heart wrenching new musical, it is also a detailed and compassionate exploration of an oft overlooked story of contemporary life. We are thrilled to welcome Giering and Gwon back to Weston and to provide this opportunity to an exciting new writing team."

Two FREE concerts of ALICE BLISS will be held at the Walker Farm at Weston Playhouse on Saturday, March 2 at 4pm and 7pm. Weston Executive Artistic Director Susanna Gellert will direct the concert reading, and Kurt Deutsch of Ghostlight Records will produce the free demo recording.

Reserve your free tickets to the performances on March 2nd by visiting:
The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company is a non-profit organization supported in part by funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and an ever-growing family of individuals and organizations who believe in the impact that the performing arts makes on its community.

Green Mountain Gourmet
It's February, the month we celebrate Valentine's Day and all things red! Here is an easy, delicious recipe for red pepper hummus. And, best of all, it's almost red and the perfect healthy snack for those you love.

Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
  • 3 medium red bell peppers
  • 2 (15 oz) cans chick peas, drained and rinsed
  • 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup Tahini
  • 3 medium to large garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1.5 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/3 cup Extra Virgin olive oil plus about 1 tablespoon for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp pepper flakes
  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Wash the parsley and set aside to dry. Chop finely when dry.
  3. Core, seed and slice peppers in quarters and place on a cookie sheet lined with either foil or a baking mat. Place the cookie sheet on the upper portion of the oven, ideally about 4-5 inches below the broiler.
  4. Set your oven to broil and broil peppers for 10 - 15 minutes, until you can see some char marks.
  5. Remove the pan from the oven and transfer the peppers into a large resealable plastic bag, seal and leave for about 10 minutes. The steam in the bag will make it really easy to remove the skin. Rub or peel the skin off and let peppers cool.
  6. Take about 2/3 of the peppers and chop into 1-1.5 inch chunks and set aside.
  7. Take the remaining 1/3 and dice into small pieces. Set aside; this is for the garnish.
  8. Using your food processor, combine the larger pieces of red pepper, chick peas, lemon juice, Tahini, garlic, salt and cumin and pulse on and off for about 30-45 seconds until you have a chunky mix.
  9. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and then, using the filler tube on the food processor, add slowly add 1/4 cup of olive oil and blend for about a minute.
  10. If you like your hummus chunky, you're all set! If you'd like it smoother, add warm but not hot water one tablespoon at a time until you have the desired consistence.
  11. Place the hummus in a decorative bowl or plate and make a well in the middle for the diced pepper garnish. Add the diced peppers and drizzle with remaining olive and sprinkle parsley and red pepper flakes on top.
  12. Serve with homemade* pita chips and carrot sticks (*or, store-bought is fine!).
This recipe makes a lot of hummus and I like to serve half and save half for the rest of the week.

Using climbing "skins" with alpine touring or telemark bindings (or even "split" snowboards), racers start at the base of the mountain, ascend it, then descend it, as fast as possible, over multiple laps, up to 6,000' cumulative vertical, in the truest test of the most complete skier overall.
Saturday, March 2

Pro Class will be competing for the cash purse with $5,000 in cash and prizes is up for grabs. A new rail garden, constructed specifically for this event will be an optimal venue for participants and spectators alike. The Amateur competition starts at 5:30 p.m. on Bull Run.
