Set for June 19 - 20, 2019
The Center of Excellence Summer Institute is a two-day event designed to provide participants with practical, research-based information that focuses on the needs and abilities of under-resourced learners.
Keynote addresses and specialized breakout sessions will focus on classroom strategies and best practices for under-resourced students around this year's theme:
Teaching Children of Poverty:
Accepting the Challenge; Leveraging the Opportunity
It is time to submit proposals for breakout sessions.
Educators learn best from other educators and your successful practices could be featured in breakout sessions. Do you have a classroom activity that has resulted in excellent outcomes? Are you using innovative ways to motivate your learners? Have you employed a brain-based strategy that energizes your classroom?
Now is the time to share with others!
Proposals are now being accepted and the process is simple.

Free NNPS Webinar for schools’ Action Teams for Partnerships.
This webinar is conducted each year to help schools that are in a “start up” phase in their partnership programs (or those who would like a “refresher”) to write a good One-Year Action Plans for Partnerships. Attendees will review basic components of the NNPS model. The session will focus on how to strengthen teamwork and how to write a goal-linked plan for partnerships for the rest of this year, and for the 2019-20 school year.
Action Teams for Partnership (ATPs) Chairs, Co-chairs, and at least three team members are encouraged to attend the webinar together. District and organization leaders may attend with their school teams.

ATP Chairs, Co-chairs, and team members may register for the webinar by sending an e-mail to Megumi Hine, NNPS Coordinator, at

. Include your name, e-mail address, affiliation, position, and the words “ATP Webinar, February 21.” Also, include the names of all ATP members who will attend with you. NNPS will send a single confirmation to you (as team leader). The ATP Chair (or leader) will receive activities for the webinar by e-mail two days before it is scheduled. The leader will be responsible for distributing copies of the activities to all team members who will attend the webinar.

Pre-Conference Poverty Simulation
has been added on Tuesday, June 18. This half-day event is designed to promote greater awareness, increase understanding, and inspire local change. Attendees role-play four 15-minute 'weeks' in poverty and experience the stressors faced by many under-resourced families. Registration is limited to 88 participants.

Summer Institute 2019 - June 19 & 20
This course is designed to provide graduate students with an initial study of issues related to life in poverty and the impact they have on teaching and learning. It includes an introductory study of six standards for teachers of children of poverty, including: life in poverty; the classroom community; family and community partnerships; curriculum design, instructional strategies and assessment; relationship-driven classroom management; and teachers as learners, leaders and advocates to improve curriculum, instruction, and assessment in schools serving large numbers of children of poverty.
Important notes about credit: This course...

typically count for degree programs at most institutions

meet requirements for Add-On Certification for Teachers of Children of Poverty

This month's featured project is...
Edcamp Palmetto: Florence
Edcamp Palmetto: Florence attracted 184 educators, representing 28 districts and including ten student teachers as registrants for the February 9th Edcamp event convened on the campus of Francis Marion University
. Co-hosted by the Center of Excellence and Palmetto State Teachers Association (PSTA),
Edcamp Palmetto: Florence had the highest participation of middle and secondary level educators of all the previous
Edcamps held across the state," according to Jed Dearybury, PSTA's director of Professional Development. Specialized sessions were provided to accommodate the large group of middle and high school teachers.

Edcamp: Palmetto.

The 'game room' was just one of the special activities available. Educators played games and then brainstormed strategies for integrating them into the curriculum at all grade levels.

The "winner" of the tape art design took home her own bundle of tape as a prize.
|
|

Participant-led discussions around classroom management, technology, and general middle school/high school curriculum and materials were part of the day.
|

The January 24 TCOPS meeting featured Mrs. Janey Brandis, Francis Marion University Professor Emeritus. Mrs. Brandis shared her expertise with effective use of professional portfolios with
TCOPScholars.
Information gained from district officials and school administrators was used to help students prepare for their development of a professional portfolio that effectively showcases their teaching and tips for the interview process. Content studied continued as Scholars explored
