ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
IS A TEAM SPORT
The 2019 Annual Community Meeting
It was an evening of enlightenment and fun. At the outset, attendees socialized with members of City Council, TEAM volunteers and community leaders. The meeting began promptly at 7:00 p.m. CEO Nancy Johnson spoke to the importance of collaboration in moving critical initiatives forward. She recounted the efforts of hundreds of volunteers during 2018 and thanked TEAM’s sponsors and donors for their support. Victor Dover of Dover, Kohl & Partners introduced Luiza Leite, the company’s on-site project manager. Master Plan information is available now at www.puntagordamasterplan.com .

A dynamic program was presented by former and current Charlotte County economic development directors Lucienne Pears and Dave Gammon respectively. Pears reflected on the positive impact TEAM had in influencing public policy with the creation of the 2005 Citizens Master Plan. “I want to applaud every one of you in TEAM. That (influencing public policy) is exactly what you have done. Now you are at a crossroads. You must continue to evolve.”

Influencing public policy is one of the key building blocks to successful economic development, according to Pears and Gammon. But there are other critical building blocks required, as well as the collaboration of many partners.  “Economic development is not Starbucks,” emphasized Pears, “that is commercial development.”
