Mentor's Tutor Tip

All Levels:
February is the month for
Valentine's. Most of our learners know about the holiday. However, it would be good to see what they know and what they want to know. So use the KWL chart to access prior knowledge.
Worksheet #1
Levels 1-2
It's good to learn vocabulary with pictures. These worksheets help our learners visually see the meaning of the words. (These worksheets are from a British website. Therefore, the word jewelry is spelled "jewellery" which is the preferred British spelling. Please explain to your learner that in the U.S. we spell the words "jewelry." Both spellings are correct and accepted.)
Levels 3-4 (all of the above)
The crossword will give our learners a chance to write the words they learned in the previous worksheets. They will have to spell jewellery the way the British spell it in order to fit in the puzzle.
Try to have your learner make sentences using the word "Valent

Levels 5-6 (all of the above)
Explain the words legend, fact, fiction.
Have the learner read the story silently. Then read it aloud together and discuss any difficult words. Let them read it again.

The text is is written in past tense. Using
Worksheet #11 have your learner find the regular and not regular past tense verbs.
Using
Worksheet #12 either have your learner write or discuss the prompt.
Use the Hierarchy of Questions to help them make their answers longer and more interesting.
