Study: White Parents Who Feel Left Behind by Today's Economy Favor Harsher Parenting Practices
In a study of more than 6,450 parents of young and school-aged children, Professor
Will Schneider and co-author Anika Schenck-Fontaine found
that, compared with highest earners, whites who perceived themselves to be members of the lower or working class were 25% more likely to believe in authoritarian parenting practices such as spanking and demanding obedience then similarly set black parents.

Social Research Speaker Series
Professor Karen Tabb Dina recently presented at the University of Michigan's
Institute for Social Research Winter 2019 Speaker Series, known as of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. Tabb Dina's lecture, "Perinatal Mental Health: Racial Disparities and Rural Mental Health Needs" was held on UM's campus in Ann Arbor on February 18th.

In a recent study, social work professor
Flavia Andrade and colleagues used data of three waves (2000, 2006, and 2010) of the Health, Well-Being, and Aging Study collected in São Paulo, Brazil, to estimate life expectancy with and without cognitive impairment for men and women across educational groups.

Perinatal Mood Disorders: Components of Care
On March 27-28,
Postpartum Support International (PSI) will be hosting a two-day course, taught by experts and engaging faculty, using an evidence-based curriculum designed for psychiatrists, nurses, physicians, social workers, mental health providers, childbirth professionals, social support providers, and anyone interested in building skills for assessment and treatment of perinatal mood disorders.
An additional
one-day course will be available for Advanced Psychotherapy training. The two-day course is a pre-requisite to this training.

Illinois Youth Survey at the
Center for Prevention Research and Development has a new Facebook page for presenting accurate data and relevant facts about youth substance use and other issues affecting youth in Illinois. The IYS is
a biannual survey of substance use attitudes and behaviors and other health and related issues among 8th, 10th and 12th grade youth across the state of Illinois.
