February 2020
Dear Tulane Parents,

Just when students are settling into a routine with their spring semester courses and other commitments, the celebration of Carnival in New Orleans can be a distraction. Encourage your students to stay on top of their assignments this month and use attending king cake parties and parades as breaks from studying--and not the other way around! It's important to maintain the momentum of their new year's and new semester's resolutions and progress toward their goals. They can register now to work on their career development goals over Spring Break. Look for the Tulane Takeover events article at the end of this issue for the details.

I hope you read Tuesday's email message * to parents from Vice President for Student Affairs Dusty Porter and Tulane University Police Department Chief Kirk Bouyelas about how to talk with your student about safety during Carnival season and the education, support and resources Tulane provides during this time. Two articles below provide additional information.

The first article addresses how Tulane is monitoring and implementing guidance from national, state and local health officials regarding novel coronavirus. Please be sure to read the information and linked answers to FAQs.

Warm regards,
Penny Wyatt, Director of Parent Programs and External Relations
Division of Student Affairs

Message from Campus Health Regarding Novel Coronavirus
Campus Health logo
We have an important message from Scott Tims, Assistant Vice President, Campus Health:

Dear Tulane Parents,

I'm writing to follow up my previous message sent on January 24, 2020, with an update on Tulane’s response to the novel coronavirus outbreak that originated in Wuhan, China. Campus Health is working closely with many of the offices across campus, including Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response and the Schools of Medicine and Public Health and Tropical Medicine to monitor this evolving situation. There are currently no cases of the virus at Tulane or in New Orleans, and health officials continue to stress that the risk of infection in the U.S. remains low.
Campus Health has prepared a comprehensive FAQ to address questions from the campus community about novel coronavirus. We encourage you to read these FAQs and follow up with your healthcare provider if you have any questions.

Consistent with any influenza/flu outbreak, we must be prepared for the possibility that cases may be reported in New Orleans. Therefore, it is important to continue to take steps to reduce disease transmission, including frequent hand washing, covering of coughs and sneezes using a tissue or sleeve (not your hands), and staying home if you feel unwell. This is flu season in New Orleans and as is typical for this time of year, we have large number of students dealing with cold, flu, and sore throat.

Tulane University is monitoring and implementing all guidance from U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, and local health officials. We are following all CDC infection Read more . . .
A Valentine's Day reminder from Tulane's Mail Services
Valentine's flowers-TU mailroom
All deliveries to students living on campus, including flowers and perishable items such as bakery items and fruit baskets, must be sent to the student's mailing address with their mail code number. Please do not send items addressed to residence halls as the front desks do not accept deliveries. Please be sure to include the student's contact phone number so that Mail Services can call to let your student know they have a perishable item, in addition to emailing the notice they routinely send for all packages. Perishables will now be available for pickup from the Warren Mail Services location on the north side of the building across from Weatherhead.
Mardi Gras Safety Resources
Each year, Campus Health and The Well for Health Promotion offer educational opportunities to equip students with the skills and knowledge to have a safe Mardi Gras experience.
  • Throughout carnival season, The Well offers one-hour workshops which contextualize health and safety within the vibrant culture of Mardi Gras. Participants have a chance to win prizes and to take home a limited-edition Look Out for Your Krewe fanny pack filled with Mardi Gras essentials such as such as hand sanitizer, tissues, band-aids, a snack, and a pocket resource card with safety tips, etiquette, and checklists. (First-come, first-served.)
  • The Well has distributed a series of "Look Out for Your Krewe" posters and resource cards that aim to help students navigate Mardi Gras. Topics include parade etiquette, checklists, taking care of each other, alcohol safety, emergency contacts, and campus resources.
Details about these Mardi Gras Safety Tips and Resources are online at campushealth.tulane.edu/mardi-gras .
Mardi Gras Break Special Hours of Operation
Tulane University recognizes a Mardi Gras Break on the academic calendar Monday, February 24 and Tuesday, February 25, thus, most offices at the University are closed from 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21 to 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26. • Dining Services will hold normal hours of operation through Sunday, February 23. Limited options will be available 7 am – 2 am on Monday, February 24 and 10 am – 10 pm on Mardi Gras day, Tuesday, February 25.
  • Students who want to stock up on groceries before the main holiday weekend may take the Elmwood-Metairie Entertainment line shuttle on Saturday, February 22 that stops at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Golden City Asian Market, and the International Food Market.
  • To support students during the weekend, Shuttles and Transportation has added special parade shuttles.
  • Tulane University Police Department will still operate 24/7 throughout the break and TUPD staff can access Student Affairs on-call staff for emergencies as needed. Encourage your student to visit the TUPD website which includes a short safety video and other helpful tips.
