in important projects dominating this year. Let's all continue volunteering by helping people and changing lives.
We kicked off the New Year with a
great
meeting at the Pagoda Restaurant.
One of the highlights is electing the Nominating Committee to fill our leadership positions for the upcoming 2020-2021 fiscal year. They are: Chairman

Another Great
: Assistance League of Hawaii was chosen this year to receive an unsolicited grant of $10,000 from
Kaneohe Ranch Management Limited
and the
Harold K. L. Castle Foundation
. Operation School Bell was selected as it provides needy elementary and middle school students with new clothes at a number of Title I schools throughout Hawaii. They wanted to express their appreciation for the meaningful volunteer work that we do.

Wayne Holu
, a retired Physical Security Specialist. His resume consists of several positions involving personal awareness training, advisory and instructional positions in the military as well as in the Department of Defense. His expertise is very relevant and timely. Recent events reveal seniors, particularly women, have been victims of assault or robbery. Wayne will provide us with ideas for self-protection.

We will be having our annual evaluation meetings on
March 11, 2020
at
10:30 am
at various member's homes. There will be five locations for these meetings and one should be near you! More detailed information about this will be given at our February Regular meeting and specific locations will also be posted in our next newsletter. So keep your ears and eyes open for that!
For those of you who have never attended one of these evaluation meetings, they are a great way to meet in a smaller, small group-setting and share ideas and suggestions for our chapter's future. We have several important things that we will be discussing, and it is so good to hear from each and every one of you. You are all vital to the success of Assistance League Hawaii!
As mentioned at our January meeting, we currently have a plan in place that is addressing your input from last year. It is available for you to look at now and is posted on our Bulletin Board near the Ohana Room. It will also be made available at the upcoming evaluation meetings. Hope to see you all there!

Operation School Bell in Kailua?
|
|
B
ecause we just received a wonderful grant from Kaneohe Ranch and Castle Foundation, ($10,000) we have been trying to decide what to do with it. We would like to put something in the newsletter about possibly opening up an other In-store Operation School Bell in Kailua for next year.
We need someone who would like to take charge of that Target in Kailua. Because Nancy and Margie are stretched so thin now with all they have to do, they would love to train someone to take charge of Kailua Target. They would train that person and show them exactly what to do. If someone is interested, could they please let Andrea or myself know. It would be a one-time commitment once a year.
February 8th is our next Operation School Bell at Target in Kapolei. Please let Nancy know if you would like to work. We had a great time this past Saturday and served 197 students. It was great and thanks to everyone for all their help.

OWL Ladies Visit Several Island Schools
|
|
Two Neighbor Island trips were completed in January - both to the Hilo area. The first trip, led by
Andrea Cyriacks
and
Ronnie Wassill
, had visits to five elementary schools Pahala, Na'alehu, Kea'au, Keonepoko and Pahoa. It's always encouraging to experience the enthusiasm from the students and teachers in these rural Big Island communities.
The following week there were two teams visiting the Hilo area - Andrea and Ronnie flew back to
Hilo and were joined by the second team of
Gerri Migita
and
Lelani Alcover
and visited eight schools, Ha'aheo, DeSilva, Chiefess Kapiolani, Kaumana Elementary, Waikeawaena, Waiakea, Kalanianaole, and Hilo Union.
A very busy time with close to 1,000 students/teachers served, and the workload is lightened each time the students show their interest and joy as they experience our animal biofact display. And, of course, the teachers love how our engaging presentation fits neatly with the 4th grade science curriculum.

t visited two classes of fourth graders at Mary Star of the Sea and experienced the appreciation of the students as they heard the actual croaking of the coqui frog on the Big Island. They also learned that the Hawaiian Hawk is off the endangered list. Teachers always make it a point to express the excitement of the kids as they are able to touch and feel the remarkable collection of animal biofacts.
Coming up are Puuhale School in February and Voyager Public Charter School, a new addition to our schools which was encouraged by a teacher who experienced the OWL presentation while teaching at Ka'ohao School in Lanikai!

Annual Finance Meeting Set For This Month
Dear Officers and Chairman,
Annual Finance Meeting - February 26, 2020 9:30 am at the
Ohana Room.
- Review of the 2019 - 2020 Budget.
- Prepare the 2020-2021 Budget. Please consult with your committee as to your needs for next fiscal year. You may want to increase, keep the same, or decrease the amount of money in your annual budget.
- Annual review of Chapter Investment Policy.

| January was another good month at the Thrift Shop, thanks to all of those who worked upstairs and downstairs. Our monthly total was $27,346.33. The daily average was $2,106 per day. Wow!! |
