KNOW YOUR BACC DIRECTOR: KAREN SMITS
I'm fortunate to be a lifelong Brown County resident and raised my family here. My husband Jeff and I live in Green Bay, have five children between us, nine grandkids (I expect that number to increase) and two dachshunds. We enjoy the outdoors, all four seasons: golf, snowshoeing, hiking and camping.
I'm a Wisconsin Badger, undergrad degree from UW-Madison. Then I earned an MBA from Lakeland University as a returning adult. I am recently retired after 26 years from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, where I served a variety of roles: Student Services Manager, Grants and Development Director, and Vice President of College Advancement. Prior to NWTC, I had positions in healthcare, both acute care and community health, and at a non-profit.
I learned a lot at NWTC, thanks to the great leadership at the college. That experience helped me define my guiding principles:
assume good intent and
all means all. Those principles cause me to intentionally model behaviors that will open opportunities for every segment of Brown County's population, every demographic and every person regardless of their previous experiences. I’m excited to have joined the Bay Area Community Council in January 2020. BACC's focus is on the future of Brown County's economy and our neighbors' quality of life. Our region’s potential depends on intentionally looking toward a future that includes all.
