JANUARY 2020 MEETING RECAP
|
Special thanks to City Secretary Julie Worster and the City of Lewisville for serving as our host for the January luncheon held at Medical City Lewisville Grand Theater. We were welcomed by Lewisville Council member TJ Gilmore.
|
Speaker Julie Burch has over 20 years of speaking professionally. Julie has had the privilege of speaking to audiences in all 50 states and designated programs for industry leaders such as Texas Tech University, City of Southlake, Social Security Administration, EEOC, Texas Women’s University, The United States Army and Air Force and many more. She is the coauthor of two books: “
The Princess Principle: Women Helping Women Discover Their Royal Spirit
” and “
Success Simplified: Simple Solutions Measurable Results
”. She also has a popular webinar training series and can be found on YouTube.
Julie’s presentation was dynamic, high energy, highly interactive and funny. The topic was learning to change your habits and change your life. You can’t stop change but you must be willing and able to adapt.
|
The three keys to change are:
(1) Explain change – the why. Why would you resist change? The number one reason for resistance is fear. But if you are seeking change, it is for a challenge, opportunity, or personal growth. We tend to think of change as losing something (taking it away) but by allowing ourselves to change you realize you did not lose something but changed the way in which you were doing it. In order for you to grow and change, you must learn to be uncomfortable.
(2) Current change – there are three areas in which we have control of ourselves. We have the power to: 1. work where you have control of your actions and attitude; 2. Face your fears and 3. Be realistic - what is the worst case scenario that could happen. An example of this is public speaking. Many people have a fear and are uncomfortable with speaking in front of crowds. Ask yourself what is the worst thing that could happen? You fall, stumble over your words? All those things could happen, but it would not be the end of the world. The more you face your fear the more it becomes comfortable.
(3) Future change – when you continually change habits it becomes normal thus reducing fear of change. Three tips for creating new habits: 1. identify the why; 2. write it down (“I will [action] at [time] in [location]”); 3. take small steps. Example is taking a new route home. Scary the first time but as you familiarize yourself with your surroundings, it becomes easy and now you are ready to change it up again. This small step will help you overcoming fear of change.
|
Remember to celebrate the small successes. The 3 C’s of Life: choices, chances, changes – you must make a choice to take a change or your life will never change -Julie Burch.
