Count everyone under your roof
$675 billion in federal funds are at stake. It is estimated that we will lose $18,250 in funds for every person not counted in Montgomery County over 10 years.
The results of the 2020 Census inform funding and planning for new clinics, school lunch programs, emergency services, and more. So, make sure you count everyone living in your home as of April 1, 2020.
Do you know who to count on your census?
- Any family members or friends who are living with you now, even if it's only for a short time
- Newborn babies and young children, even if they are not in your family
- Your roommates or any renters
- All of the above
These people are often missed in the census. This means they can miss out on resources for themselves and their communities over the next 10 years. Make sure everyone is counted in the 2020 Census!
How can you get involved?
- Join our team of 2020 Census Ambassadors! Are you a resident who wants to volunteer? The Office of Community Partnerships is recruiting 2020 Census Ambassadors to help ensure that everyone in Montgomery County is counted on April 1, 2020 (Census Day). Census Ambassadors are volunteers trained by the Office of Community Partnerships and the U.S. Census Bureau who conduct education outreach by hosting information tables and distributing promotional materials; engaging residents at various locations across the county. Visit our 2020 Census home page to apply and register for a training now!

What do partners do?
Partnership is not a one-size-fits-all approach. We'll work with partners to select creative, impactful, and mutually beneficial ways of ensuring everyone in Montgomery County to be counted. There are many ways to make a difference as a 2020 Census Partner.

African Affairs Advisory Group Update
April 1, 2020 is Census Day. Targeted outreach continues to increase the response rate to the Census. According to 2020Census.gov, residents should expect to receive their official invite (Census Bureau mail) in mid-March with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census. More awareness and focused education on hard-to-reach county populations is underway. The East County Regional Services Center kicked-off its 2020 Census Complete Count Committee on January 28, 2020. East County is known for its large immigrant community, particularly African immigrants. East Couty Regional Director, Mr. Jewru Bandeh welcomes all community stakeholders to participate in the 2020 Census campaign by joining the Complete Count Committee and becoming a partner, ambassador or volunteer. For more information, please email Harrieta.Shangarai@montgomerycountymd.gov
Why should Census outreach include the next generation of historically hard-to-
count populations? Keeping the next generation informed and engaged gives us a head start to a future of civically engaged citizens. Most immigrant parents who speak little English depend on their children for translation. Kids can be a great resource in a household that experiences language barriers. The 2020 Census will include access to language guides and glossaries of up to 59 languages, as well as options to complete the Census in multiple languages.
