Business Owner Celebrates the Season of Giving in a Unique Way
|
Prescott business owner Vickie Johnston of H2O Health created a unique opportunity to engage her customers in the spirit of giving. Her philanthropic nature coupled with the art of creativity joined together to create what she dubbed the "Beary Merry Christmas Tree," a floor to ceiling Christmas tree created from teddy bears her customers donated, in return for a free body scan. At the end of the holiday season, the bears were donated to the Yavapai Family Advocacy Center, a program of Prevent Child Abuse Arizona. Soft stuffed animals and blankets can provide comfort and a sense of security for children after experiencing a traumatic event. Now, thanks to our friend at H2O Health, the children who visit the Yavapai Family Advocacy Center have a wonderful selection to choose from.
In addition to new stuffed animals, the Yavapai Family Advocacy Center often needs donations of items such as individually packaged snacks, new comfortable clothing, and bottled water.

Impact Story
Welcome to our New Board Members
|
Towards the end of last year, PCA Arizona welcomed two new board members: Darin Hood and April Rhodes.
Darin Hood is a registered representative and financial adviser with Principal Securities in Phoenix. He first learned about PCA Arizona while helping create a public service announcement to educate the community on the dangers of shaking a baby. During his service on the board, Darin said he looks forward to "learning and growing personally and professionally. I hope to learn how to be a better servant and a better leader while serving on the board."
April Rhodes also joined recently, and is the Chief Executive Officer of Spectrum Healthcare in Prescott. Formerly a child and family therapist, April was impressed by the projects led by PCA Arizona, such as the annual Child Abuse Prevention Conference. After attending the conference, April described it as "a go-to source of high qualify training and information" for her team. She hopes to over her insights and share her expertise on preventing child abuse before problems arise.
Welcome, Darin and April! Prevent Child Abuse Arizona is so grateful to have your leadership and expertise on our board.

Family First Transition Act
Signed Into Law
In December 2019, the Family First Transition Act was signed into law, a victory for the child welfare community. This law will allow states to transform state child welfare systems by providing substance abuse, mental health, and other prevention and treatment services to strengthen families and avert the need to place children in the foster care system. States will now have the option to claim federal reimbursement for approved prevention services designed to help at-risk children stay with their parents or legal guardians. Liabilities Caused by New Tax Law Can be Minimized Through Charitable Giving
In December 2019, the Presidency signed a new tax law that included the Setting Every Community up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act. This law includes raising the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) age for IRAs from 70 1/2 to 72. Often times, individuals will leverage the IRA Charitable Rollover to give their RMD as a gift to charity and avoid penalties. This law will also require certain beneficiaries to withdraw the entire inhertied retirement account over a 10-year span. For some, this may create a burdensome tax liability. One option to consider if you are hoping to avoid creating these tax liabilities for yourself or a loved one is to designate part of your IRA to charity, which may minimize tax implications of the new 10 year withdrawal provision. For more information, read this
article and consider speaking with your tax adviser.

Director's Corner
A Note from Claire:
We Need to Talk
|
Almost no one likes to talk about child sexual abuse. It can bring up a range of feelings, from mere discomfort to shame, rage, and hopelessness.
But avoiding the topic has a cost, and that cost is the perpetuation of child sexual abuse. It is estimated that
one in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18
th
birthday, and 90% of children who experience sexual abuse know their abuser.
A few months ago, I was trained as an authorized facilitator for Stewards of Children®, a two-hour training created by the nonprofit organization
Darkness to Light
. The training shares simple but effective ways that adults can create environments that protect children from sexual abuse.
Information and conversations are powerful. They can initiate action that changes a child’s life for the better. Let’s talk more about preventing and addressing child sexual abuse.
If you’re interested in bringing the Stewards of Children® training to your team, please email [email protected].
