A Note from Our Executive Director

Dear Friends:

Who was Ed Roberts? No, that is not the answer to a question on Jeopardy.

Ed Roberts was the man largely responsible for the creation of the independent living movement. Faced with institutional discrimination from having contracted polio as a young man, Ed set the pieces in motion to launch what are now over 400 CIL (Centers for Independent Living) across the United States.

This past month was the 81st anniversary of Ed Roberts' birthday on January 23. Ed thought of himself as a "star" and not a "cripple." He did not accept "no" for an answer when he demanded accessibility accommodations at the University of California at Berkley while a student there in the mid 1960's. His experience led him to realize the greater community had to do a much better job for people with disabilities and this led up to the creation of the first CIL in Berkley, California.

Ed was also directly involved in the creation of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 , the forerunner of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 . Were it not for Ed Roberts, there would be no Rehabilitation Act and more than likely no ADA. He was a visionary and pioneer in so many ways. Take a moment to Ed Roberts and also take a moment to watch this video about him on YouTube . You will find it to be quite worthwhile.

As always, I want to hear from you. Please contact me at 513-241-2600 (extension 211) or by email.
