Empowering people with disabilities to lead independent
and inclusive lives in the community.
A Note from Our Executive Director
Who was Ed Roberts? No, that is not the answer to a question on Jeopardy.
Ed Roberts was the man largely responsible for the creation of the independent living movement. Faced with institutional discrimination from having contracted polio as a young man, Ed set the pieces in motion to launch what are now over 400 CIL (Centers for Independent Living) across the United States.
This past month was the 81st anniversary of Ed Roberts' birthday on January 23. Ed thought of himself as a "star" and not a "cripple." He did not accept "no" for an answer when he demanded accessibility accommodations at the University of California at Berkley while a student there in the mid 1960's. His experience led him to realize the greater community had to do a much better job for people with disabilities and this led up to the creation of the first CIL in Berkley, California.
CILO is one of 12 independent living centers across the state of Ohio. Established in 1977, we are the oldest IL Center in Ohio reaching seven counties in Southwestern Ohio. CILO is a participating member of the Ohio Statewide Independent Living Council.
