Moving Forward Into 2020

In the Gospel of Mark there is scene in chapter two that is outstanding; Jesus is hanging out with the most recent disciple he has called and the religious leaders ask a very challenging question. They ask, "Why is Jesus eating with all those sinners?" Three observation about this challenge: 1. Jesus calls sinners to be his disciples. 2. Eating together is an important part of Jesus ministry. 3. Ministry often will take us in directions that those in power will be intimidated by.

Donating IRA Required Minimum Distributions to Charity
You may request that a portion of your IRA required minimum distribution (RMD) be payable to and sent directly to First Lutheran Church.

How it works:
The provision allows retirees age 70 ½ and older to donate up to $100,000 tax free from their IRA each year. Generally, when you take an RMD from your IRA, it is treated as taxable income. Under this provision those assets are excluded from income if the RMD is made directly to charity.

The distribution is not included in your income so you avoid the potential negative consequences that regular IRA withdrawals in retirement can create, including taxes on Social Security benefits.
RMDs excluded from income are also equivalent to a 100% deduction. Normally, charitable contribution deductions are limited to a lower percentage (or are eliminated altogether) for taxpayers who do not itemize and take the standard deduction.

IRS rules mandate that individuals age 72 (70 ½ if you reach 70 ½ before January 1, 2020) and older take RMDs from their IRA each year, regardless of whether the income is needed. These annual withdrawals are subject to ordinary income taxes. By making a charitable contribution from your IRA, you can satisfy your RMD amount without reporting additional income.

You cannot claim a charitable contribution deduction for any distribution not included in your income.

HOPELINK food bank emphasis in February is for household paper and plastic products (cleaning products, toilet paper, paper towels, plastic wrap, foil laundry soap, etc.)

Scrip and Other Passive Fundraising for First Lutheran Church!
We have several opportunities for earning money while you shop for FLC's many social ministry programs:
  1. Buy Scrip on Sunday mornings or sign up for Shop with Scrip. Many vendors are available for instant purchase and redemption from your mobile phone in the Shop with Scrip program. No more writing checks; the money is automatically deducted from your checking account using Presto Pay. (The profit margin for scrip is not great enough to support credit card payments.) Scrip returns anywhere from 3 - 12% of your purchases to FLC! You can buy grocery cards, movie tickets, Amazon, even Groupon - the list is great!
  2. Sign up for Amazon Smile and name First Lutheran Church as your charity. Every time you shop with Amazon Smile FLC receive .05% of your purchase price. You can still use Amazon Prime. Get your kids to sign up, too!
  3. Link your Fred Meyer rewards card to their Community Rewards program for First Lutheran Church. All of your purchases will result in a quarterly donation to FLC.
  4. Sign up for Bartell's B Caring Program, and name First Lutheran Church as your charity.
