Saturday: See the world from bog turtle's view
|
|
Now, in deep winter, all is quiet at Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Stroudsburg. Or so it seems.
Find out more about one of the critters who depend on this complex system of habitats and the people who care for it. Come to a “Turtle Talk” at
2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15
.
The star of the show is the bog turtle, a Pocono native. Maxing out at barely 4 inches long, bog turtles are the smallest turtles in North America. And the cutest.
Join Mike Horne, refuge manager, for a talk about bog turtles and other creatures that rely on habitat under Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge’s protection.
IF YOU GO: Turtle Talk
WHEN:
2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020
WHERE:
Meet at refuge headquarters at 2138 Croasdale Road, Stroudsburg. Ample parking. Please be considerate of adjoining private landowner. Trails at the refuge are open year-round. No pets or motorized vehicles.
DIRECTIONS:
From south Stroudsburg, take Route 191 South up and over Godfrey’s Ridge, past Stroudsmoor. At the foot of the hill, take a sharp left onto Cherry Valley Road. Go about one mile. Croasdale Road is on your right.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
|
|
|
It's a joke I can only use once every four years, but “leaping forward” is a concept that we are always embracing at BWA.
Sometimes we grow our organization slowly, and other times we are ready to leap. We are leaping further into the digital realm by launching our new website. Same great name, but new, improved and easier to use: Renew your membership, see our upcoming events, get involved or simply get to know us better.
We are leaping into another training session on MS4 on March 16 to assist municipalities with their MS4 stormwater permits.
I have never seen a turtle leap, but you can leap over the ridge and into Cherry Valley to hear a fascinating discussion on turtles led by USFWS Manager (and biologist at heart) Mike Horne on Saturday.
I was always told to "look before you leap," and indeed BWA staff is looking into additional programs and projects for the future year to advance our mission of protecting water quality and quantity throughout our Pocono waters.
