Coronavirus update for Anteater
parents & families

In case you missed the notice we sent you last week on Coronavirus, we want to share some information here. You may be seeing news stories on the new virus from Wuhan China called Coronavirus. While the Orange County Healthcare Agency confirmed a positive case of Coronavirus in Orange County, CA, there are currently no known positive cases of Coronavirus involving a student, staff, or faculty member on the UCI campus or at the UCI Health Medical Campus.

UCI continues to operate normally, classes are not cancelled and the campus is not closed. Additionally, all ancillary activities such as seminars, athletic competitions, performances and events continue to proceed as scheduled. Students should plan to continue attending classes and participating in campus activities. Reminders are being sent to students via email and social media about the vigilance of staying healthy through frequent handwashing, hydration and ample sleep. And, the campus has increased the frequency for wiping down common areas and using disinfectant.

UCI has created a website to house information about Coronavirus and campus operations. We encourage you to visit it here: ehs.uci.edu/PublicHealth/coronavirus.html , where you will find FAQs and a candid podcast where I address many of our students' concerns. Please check back as the website will be updated on an ongoing basis.

We are working closely with the local, regional and national health authorities to monitor the latest developments on Coronavirus. The Centers for Disease Control states 14 days prior to onset of symptoms as the window of exposure. As of the writing of this newsletter, any of our students who had traveled to Wuhan should be clear of this incubation window. If they are not showing symptoms then they are not at risk and there is no need to test them. If a student has had symptoms for more than two weeks - then they should see their medical provider or call the Student Health Center.

We continue to follow the guidance of the  Centers for Disease Control and work with the Orange County Health Care Agency and UCI Health leadership to evaluate the situation in Orange County, and we will share updates by email, social media, and on both the Student Health Center and Public Health websites. Thank you for your support in keeping our campus healthy.
