2020 American Associations Day on the Hill March 19-20
There's still time to register!
Join ASAE in Washington, D.C., on March 19-20, 2020, to participate in American Associations Day, the only legislative fly-in for association professionals. From tax reform to defending association meetings, there is no shortage of issues that threaten the association community. There has never been a more important time to showcase our value to society.
It is critical that we share with Congress The Power of A message: associations make the world smarter, safer, and better every day. Because if they don't know, how will they stand up for us? At this year's fly-in, association advocates will urge Congress to pass a bipartisan bill to expand individuals' use of "529" education savings accounts to cover the costs of professional certification and credentialing programs.
Join us to learn about association policy issues and to get valuable face time with colleagues from your home state, association CEOs, the ASAE Board of Directors, and other leaders in the association community. Together we can show Congress the power of associations. You don't need to have a background in government relations to join!
There is no registration fee for this event. Additionally, a scholarship is available for attendees from outside the DC-metro area. This event also includes 3.5 CAE credit hours.

Scholarships for Institute for Organization Management available
WSAE is again proud to partner with Institute for Organization Management, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation's professional development program for non-profit executives, and offer four $500 partial tuition scholarships to one of Institute's 2020 sites. The four scholarships, available to our members, will be awarded to students attending Institute for the first time to assist with enrollment fees and cannot be combined with any other Institute scholarships. Please note, this can be combined with the Premier Investor Discount (PID) and/or Group Rate.
For almost 100 years, Institute has educated association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders across the country through its national program, highly rated curriculum and high-caliber instructors. Thousands of executives have attended Institute sites across the country to strengthen their management skills, learn industry best practices and gain a broad national perspective from peers. Institute has helped them build stronger organizations, become stronger business advocates and better serve their members. In addition, you will earn points towards your CCE or CAE as Institute's curriculum is directly tied to the bodies of knowledge of both industry certifications.
Upon completion of the Institute program, graduates receive the IOM recognition which allows them to use the letters "IOM" in public mention and professional correspondence. The IOM recognition signifies the completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management and commitment to the industry.
If you are interested in this scholarship opportunity, contact Michelle Czosek (

Fast track your way to innovation
by Sherry Budziak, .orgSource
Is your association innovative enough to survive in the roaring twenties? Before you answer, name three strategies you use to promote creative thinking. If they don't roll off your tongue, consider this:
- Blockbuster-had a chance to buy Netflix and didn't.
- Toys R Us-let a contract with Amazon derail their ecommerce opportunities.
- Xerox-never capitalized on the many breakthrough technologies developed at its Palo Alto Research Center.
Some readers might believe these cautionary tales don't apply to associations. Associations are about mission before value, right? They don't have shareholders anticipating big gains. There are organizations with a century of progress under their belts that are doing just fine. With competent governance and administration, the time-honored strategies for success don't change. Clinging to those ideas is like hugging a rattlesnake. It will bite you, and it might be fatal. As you read, you might be asking: Why is innovation so important?

ARC emerges
WSAE member Jennifer Rzepka, CAE, is excited to announce the ownership change and rebranding of Svinicki Association Management, Inc. (SAMI) to Association Resource Center, Inc. (ARC).
Rzepka has been working with the company for twenty years, for the past five years as 50% owner while purchasing the company from former business partner Jane A. Svinicki, CAE. The two have had a long, successful history that Rzepka looks forward to expanding in the new decade as President of ARC. With a full-time staff of over a dozen employees serving nearly twenty state and national non-profit associations, the company has had a strong and consistent path that made for a smooth transition through the buy-out.
Rzepka says, "It's thrilling to see the re-invigorated engagement and buy-in as I continue making changes, empowering the incredibly talented management team and engaging staff members at all levels of the company. I am honored to carry this company into the future and keep our strong legacy alive of exceptional people providing exceptional services to our clients."

ASAE ramps up support for 529 Bill
ASAE and its Professional Certification Coalition (PCC) are urging associations to support a bipartisan bill introduced last December to allow "529" education savings accounts to be used for workforce training, professional certification and other credentialing program costs. The Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow's Workforce Act was introduced by Reps. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) and Rob Wittman (R-VA) to help students and individuals already in the workforce advance their career development through training, certification and credentialing programs.

Capitol Hill closely watching global tax rewrite
As talks continue in search of a unified approach to taxing the digital economy, the House and Senate tax-writing committees are concerned about the impact any global tax plan would have on U.S. tax revenue. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is seeking consensus from more than 130 countries on a plan for a global minimum tax focused on allocating more tax revenue from big tech companies and other multinationals to countries where those corporations have a large market presence.
