February 2020
Sustain Your Well-Being!

It’s well-known that exercise, eating vegetables, and managing stress are important factors in a long and healthy life. However, external factors can threaten well-being and longevity, such as poor air quality, infectious disease, and food insecurity. These potential threats are exacerbated by climate change. The good news is that there are many opportunities at UC Berkeley to make a difference. In fact, Be Well at Work’s Spring 2020 theme is Sustain Your Well-Being. Take advantage of these workshops open to UC Berkeley staff and faculty to take care of yourself, your family, and your planet.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:
  • Choose Eat Well Berkeley caterers that are also Certified Zero Waste caterers (ACT Catering, Checkers, or Market Hall to name a few)
  • Save money and electricity with the Million LED Challenge
  • Volunteer with the UC Berkeley staff garden to help reduce the need for pesticides and herbicides on campus grounds. Spending time outside, and gardening specifically, may relieve stress, boost your mood, and provide a source of community.
  • Attend one or more of our sustainability-focused workshops
  • Become a certified Healthy Department and learn sustainable ways to create a healthy workplace culture
  • Practice random acts of kindness. Kindness is contagious, and people that are kind to others tend to be kinder to the planet.

Heart Health

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. During February, otherwise known as American Heart Month, we promote awareness of heart disease and the preventative steps we can take. Friday 2/7 is National Wear Red Day, to symbolize the support of heart health.

Small changes can have a big impact. Here are some healthy lifestyle choices you can make that can help prevent heart disease:
  • Stay Active - our Active @ Work program is a great resource to help you incorporate fitness into your workday.
  • Eat Healthy - visit Eat Well @ Work, where you can find ideas for a healthy lunch and special events.
  • Watch your blood pressure and cholesterol - attend a Know Your Numbers health screening to help identify your potential risk. The last one for this semester is Fri 1/31, you can still register for an appointment.
  • Manage your stress & sleep
  • Live smoke free - Get help to quit.
