2020-2021 School Theme:

Walking Together In Christ
Happy Valentine's Day! I love how the word "Valentine" fits into John 3:16! It reminds us all of how much GOD LOVES US, that He sent His Son to save us, and we are to share that LOVE with others!!! That's what we are all about here at Unity!!!

We made it through January with flying colors and are marching into 2021 with high hopes for a great second semester. Lots of exciting and wonderful things going on, and NONE of them could be possible without your continued prayers, gracious hours of volunteering and GENEROUS financial support! You continue to amaze us and God is blessing these students! THANK YOU!!!

Chapel Speakers
Our students continue to enjoy having guest speakers come in to lead our Wednesday Chapel Service each week. Recently we were blessed by
Mr. Kevin Williams, our 8th grade teacher at Unity, and Rev. Dr. Tony Troup of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Waterloo, IL, and we continue to enjoy Pastor Dickerson’s Bible teachings as well.
Belong To Jesus Time
Every Thursday a different group of students leads the “Belong to Jesus” time.
It’s great to see our students improving in their leadership skills. Here is first
grade and Pre K 4 leading us.
We had snow for the first time and the students enjoyed it on their break time... and Mrs. Venable’s first graders did an experiment with it using all of their 5 senses to describe and explain snow.
HONOR ROLL!!!! We are extremely proud of these students for making Honor Roll (a GPA of 3.0-3.49) and High Honor Roll (a GPA of 3.5-4.0)
Happy Lutheran School Week! Each day we had a different theme and dressed up accordingly. Monday’s Theme was “MISSIONS” and reminded us how we are
“SENT to SERVE in the World." Psalm 72:8-19. We dressed up in SPORT shirts to remind us we all have a job to do! Even the Librarians wore sport shirts! And Mrs. Gully gets the prize for having the MOST TEAM LOGOS on one shirt! And Mrs. Hardieway and Mr. Wiesbrock tied at 11 students each dressing up. GO TEAM!!!

Tuesday’s Theme was “Pastors and Teachers Sent to Serve” and students wore their class T-shirts (each class had its own color). We are SO GRATEFUL for our Pastor Dickerson and our 11 AMAZING teachers! The verses were from Ephesians 4:11-13.

Wednesday’s Theme was “Serving Together on God’s Team” and we wore our school colors of maroon and gold. We remembered that just like a body has many parts, we all play important roles in the body of Christ. Verses were 1 Corinthians 12:12-27.

Thursday’s Theme was “Serving in Homes and Communities” and we wore our Sunday best! These students spruce up nicely and we enjoyed Zooming with Grandparents on this day. Scripture was Luke 12:35-40.

For Grandparents Day students Zoomed with their relatives to learn more about life in "The Good Old Days." Mr. Williams' 8th grade class heard from his aunt and grandparents about life in Jamaica, food, and what Mr. Williams was like as a kid… the students learned a LOT!

Friday’s Theme was "Sent to Serve as Jesus' Servants" John 13:1-17, Career Day! Students dressed up as what they want to be when they grow up. These first 2 below want to be principals one day! Everyone did a great job dressing up, and it’s great to know our world is in WONDERFUL hands with these students' BIG ambitions in life!

For Career Day Mrs. Venable’s 1st grade class and Mrs. Gould’s 2nd grade class held a Zoom session with Jill Henke, the Director of Community Programming for Gateway Pet Guardians. Students learned how stray animals are caught and cared for, how they are returned to owners if possible, or adopted. Both classes donated money to buy supplies for the Center: food, toys and leashes. Way to go, 1st and 2nd graders!!!

Congregation Visits
I know with COVID many churches are online, but if you ARE meeting in person and wish for me to come speak to your congregation, please let me know. I can also make a presentation via Zoom to your church or Bible Class or send you a DVD
to play our Promo Video. Call me, Nancy Stallard, at
618-874-6605 or email: Nstallard@unityesl.org
We thank Ken & Christin Reinert and Faith Lutheran at O’Fallon for featuring our school's video in all 3 of their services on January 25 and doing their annual "Noisy Offering" for us! They do a collection for us EVERY January, and we sooooo appreciate the support! Bless you!!!
The Annual Fund Drive total is FINALLY all in, and we PRAISE GOD and THANK YOU!!!!!!! Your giving was extremely GENEROUS, and the GRAND total was $265,575, and for Giving Tuesday it was $22,500!!!! That covers 1/4 of our annual budget. Whoohoo!!! Because of that, we can keep the school open and continue to give the students a great education and keep telling them about the love of Jesus! I love Proverbs 11:25: “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” So we say “THANKS for being a Refresher” to Unity!
The librarians have been working extremely hard taking books to students in their classrooms on a cart because of COVID. They have also been excited to have some new volunteers come in and help enter the 15,000 book titles into our new Destiny system. So far, this group of hardworking ladies have entered 8,500 titles, so only about 6,500 to go! Mary Neher says we could use some new books in the library. If you would like to purchase some, please contact me at Nstallard@unityesl.org and I will give you a list of titles the school would love to have. Also, we are
currently accepting gently used or new books. The librarians ask that the books not be older than a publication date of 2000. They would love to have Christian books, Easter and Christmas books, fiction, nonfiction, American history books, early reader books, and especially for the older kids, chapter books. Please, no magazines, encyclopedias or dictionaries.

I’m thankful for ALL our Unity volunteers but grateful today for Mrs. Teresa Hancock. She started
out doing data entry in the library
and then has assisted me by buying
2 metal shelf racks AND helping me assemble them (and yes.... they are STILL standing!) Now my back room IS ORGANIZED!!! And she helped by assembling Christmas Food Bags in December, sorting crafts for the teachers, and putting up my bulletin board of Honor Roll students…. So if YOU have an hour or 2 (or 3 or 4!), call me Nancy Stallard, at
or email: Nstallard@unityesl.org
and we’ll arrange a time… We are always in need of help (VERY random help!). But like I always say …
“Team-work makes the Dream-work” so thank you, Teresa, and ALL our volunteers! YOU ALL ROCK!!!!

Thrivent is here to HELP!!!
If you are a Thrivent member, you can help us in 2 ways!!!
1.       Apply for an Action Team Grant
Go to www.thrivent.com and scroll down and click on “Generosity” or click here:   Volunteer Opportunities | Thrivent Action Teams
to apply for an Action Team Grant. Every Thrivent member has TWO grants a year. If you don’t use them, you will LOSE them! Some ideas would be: books for our library, bookshelves for teachers' rooms, more outdoor playtime equipment (jump ropes, skip ropes, soccer goals, sidewalk chalk), a plan to beautify our playground asphalt top and paint “games” on it like 4 square, hop scotch, etc., beautify our garden area with picnic benches and landscaping.

2.       Thrivent Choice Dollars
Remember, you can apply your Thrivent Choice Dollars to Unity! You need to do this by March 31. To do that, simply go to www.thrivent.com and scroll down and click on “Generosity”
Click on “Direct Choice Dollars” and find us at “Unity Lutheran Christian Elementary School.”
Staff Spotlight
This month our Staff Spotlight falls on Ms. Andrea Roy, who is our AMAZING 3rd grade teacher!
Ms. Roy began substituting for us at Unity in 2015 and became fulltime in August of 2020. She is teaching our third grade students. Prior to teaching, she served in our US Navy for 10 years.

She says she enjoys teaching because it gives her the opportunity to serve her community. She grew up in East St. Louis, has been a member of Unity Lutheran Church since 1986, and is excited to be giving back.

She always strives to inspire her students by teaching them the fundamentals: being on time, always completing their work, giving their best every day, being kind and respectful, honoring God, and working on the relationships in their lives. She wants them to excel in school but also in life.

Her favorite Bible verse is Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

Her students say she makes learning fun for them, and she likes to do experiments and activities to enhance their learning skills. She loves to laugh and make class enjoyable for them as they learn.

We are all so blessed by Ms. Roy this year!!!
