Do you feel we are at a pivotal point in history when issues are being openly confronted that were only alluded to in the past? I do, and so does AAUW. AAUW National is shifting its program emphasis to clarify that "equity for all" means a greater emphasis on addressing racial inequities and a broader understanding of gender. Here in New Jersey, our AAUW NJ programming committee, headed by Jacqueline McGuinness, is also committed to seize this moment.
Already, we have had opportunities to increase our awareness of systemic racism through programs that have been shared by several of our Jersey branches. For February, Black History Month, we have planned an AAUW NJ double-feature series of programs to help us learn how to be more aware and inclusive, and we expect this type of action-oriented programming to continue through the fall.
We are also accelerating into the technical future to help achieve our mission. A training session with tips on how to host a better virtual meeting was organized by Communications Chair Mariel Kolker to help us become better AAUW leaders. The students who would have attended AAUW NJ's Tech Trek camp at Stockton University last summer, will be invited to attend a virtual Tech Trek camp this summer - continuing our commitment to supporting girls who are interested in STEM, but might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the exciting possibilities of careers in STEM fields.
We look forward to your active participation in our programs. In order to bring about change, AAUW needs your support, locally in New Jersey and nationally!

Part 1
AAUW National:
Creating a Diversity Structure and Planning for Success
Thursday, February 11
3 - 4:30p.m. ET
Walking us through the DEI Toolkit and related resources, AAUW’s Inclusion and Equity Committee will highlight the process for beginning to engage your branch in the conversation and creating an effective diversity and inclusion plan. We will also feature a discussion with Linda J. Carpenter, PhD, co-chair of the Diversity Committee of AAUW’s Lake / Sumter (FL) branch, to discuss their experience with the diversity planning process and to share some practical insights for branches looking to undertake this process for themselves.

Part 2
AAUW NJ:
Doing the Work: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Saturday, February 27
10-11:30 a.m. ET
This session will be a conversation among AAUW NJ members, getting together to discuss and plan for actions we can take to help AAUW NJ become more inclusive. This topic was also one of the clear outcomes of our December Un-conference, and this session will forward the work begun there.

On January 19th, Jackie McGuinness and Karen Brown presented an overview of AAUW’s Work Smart Online Program for Salary Negotiation to approximately 35 attendees of the Dress for Success Organization of Northern, NJ as part of AAUW NJ’s equity mission. Dress for Success is a nonprofit organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.
The key points that were driven home: Know your facts! Know your value! Know your salary! Know your strategy! We also went over how to handle certain questions during an interview or salary negotiation. The program was well received by the attendees and we anticipate that these women will sign up for the online program.

On January 30th, AAUW NJ members upped their Zoom game...
We were fortunate to have Lauren Muccilli from Douglass College, Rutgers University, help us learn to host and run Zoom meetings. Over thirty members attended this session, helping us move into a more connected age.

Like A Woman - still time to watch!
Many thanks to director Gail Mooney for allowing AAUW NJ continued access to her important video screened last month for our members. This documentary celebrates barrier-breaking women in male-dominated professions.
Thanks also to Madison Branch and the League of Women Voters for hosting last month's virtual screening, and to AAUW NJ Charitable Trust for funding it.

Act Now!
The bipartisan Paycheck Fairness Act was just introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, and it will be taken up by the U.S. Senate in the coming weeks. We’ve worked for 24 years to pass this critical bill, and this is the year we’ll succeed. We need to mobilize quickly to ensure we get it across the finish line.
January 29th marked the 12th anniversary of the signing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. What more fitting tribute than to continue that legacy by joining us to demand equal pay now?
Equal pay for equal work is a widely popular principle. Congress must act like it. Use our toolkit to urge your members of Congress to do their part by cosponsoring and supporting the Paycheck Fairness Act today!

to the annual Central District
Inter-branch Meeting:
“Understanding Sexuality and Gender Identity Workshop”
Tuesday, March 16, 2021
6:30PM ET via Zoom
The program is designed to help attendees understand the basics of sexuality delineating the terms “lesbian”, “gay”, “bisexual”, “transgender”, “non-binary”, “heterosexual”, “cisgender” among others, as well as how these categories are “defined”. It begins by explaining the basic stages of sexual development regarding the general physical, cognitive and emotional milestones people undergo as they mature. It will also detail the four different components that make up sexuality: chromosomal sex, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation. The program will be presented by Ashley Chiappano, MA, Safe Schools & Community Education Manager at Garden State Equality, New Jersey’s Largest LGBTQ Advocacy & Education Organization.
