Mayor's Message

"A Spoonful (cube) of Sugar will help the Medicine Go Down"

Well that was what I was told when I was a student in school back in the 60s. My teacher wanted to give me a spoonful or rather a square cube of sugar to help me swallow the pink syrup polio vaccine that coated it.  In fact, I had to swallow the sugar cube once each week for three weeks in a row. I thought it was pretty cool actually. I did not really understand what polio was full. But I very much enjoyed the cube
of sugar each week.

Later I learned more about polio and what it could do to you. In fact, a friend of mine in school contracted the disease and lost the use of his legs. I remember pushing him around in a wheelchair for several years as we both attended the same classes in school. Polio was once one of the most feared diseases in the United States. In the early 1950s, before a vaccine had been found, polio caused over 15,000 cases per year of paralysis. Following the introduction of the oral vaccine in 1963 cases fell to less than 100 in the 60s and less than 10 in the 70s.

Due to the vaccine, polio has been eliminated in the US for over 40 years. Since 1979 no cases of polio have originated in the United States. Also because of other vaccines, smallpox, diphtheria, mumps, measles, rubella, and hepatitis have all been eliminated from our society in America today. So why should we get vaccinated against these deadly diseases? First, immunizations can save lives. Second, vaccination is safe and effective. Third, immunizations protect others you care about. Fourth, immunizations can save time and money. And fifth, immunizations protect future generations. I know of multiple friends and friends of friends who have died due to COVID19 to date. One was a father of 56 years of age with multiple children at home. One was a 64-year-old government official. One was a 70-year-old grandfather who was sick for only two weeks prior to dying.

I met with Robert Garff, the owner of the Ken Garff Auto Corporation, 3 months prior to his contracting COVID-19 on a trip to Palm Springs a year ago this month. No one really understood or knew what the disease was at that time. He was in fine health when I visited with him in his office in late 2019. Not long after arriving back to Utah from his trip, he took sick and died shortly thereafter. He has done so much for Utah through charities, he brought the Winter Olympics to Utah in 2002, he served in leadership in the Utah Legislature, and mostly he was a hard-working and giving person who helped so many in our state. I was very sorry to learn of his death from COVID-19.

Vaccination is the means whereby we can eradicate this disease and allow our state's and nation's citizens to get back to normal lives. It is the means that we can save lives. I would ask each person who reads this newsletter to think about all of the many diseases that we have eliminated from our society by past vaccinations. And that we each think about what we can do for our families, friends, and future generations by getting vaccinated against the COVID1-9 disease. So I ask for each of us to get vaccinated now and save a nation.

Reflect and Give Thanks

As we all are living through this pandemic and trying to keep our lives somewhat normal, I have reflected back to my past and looked forward to the future.

As I ponder on our freedoms and all those that have given their lives to protect them, let us always remember and give thanks for their sacrifice. As an Orem citizen and elected official, I want to let our first responders know that I support them 100%.
I truly appreciate the Orem Police and Fire Departments for all they do for our city.
Orem is a very safe city, because of their dedication and willingness to put their lives on the line every day. They keep my family and your families safe and protected.

I also appreciate our City employees for the work they do to keep the City running.
We are very blessed to have so many people who are committed to make Orem a great city to live in. During this challenging time, I hope we can all reflect on our past and appreciate the sacrifices that have and are being made for us. Let us all choose to be a little kinder, not be offended so easily, and look for opportunities to serve others around us.

I am proud to be an American and I am grateful for the freedoms we enjoy. May God bless America and our great City of Orem!

Everyday Strong Tip
Are you ever hurt by your child’s behavior? When we have the mindset that a child is behaving a certain way because “I’m not a good parent” or “She just wants to rebel against me” we make their behavior about us. As we shift our mindset, listen, and let our children feel safe to share their feelings, we will be closer to helping our children feel safe, connected, and confident.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
