Note From The Principal
Every day I am impressed by the ways in which students, teachers, and to a much larger extent this year, parents, are involved daily in the process of teaching and learning. The benefits of perseverance and creativity have created opportunities for students to continue learning and growing in the midst of challenges.
As the year has progressed, there have been many requests to move from remote to in-person learning. We have been able to accommodate these requests in order to meet the needs of families and students. At this point we are running short on seats, specifically in 6th grade, and have started a short waitlist. We are actively looking at ways to increase our in-person seat capacity while maintaining distancing and safety protocols. If you are interested in a move to in-person learning, please contact the main office.
I would like to thank all of our parents who have been using the pickup process this year. Your cooperation has been very helpful. While we are looking into options to address the issue in the future, I understand that the snow has made this process more challenging. I would encourage families to send students with footwear that is conducive for walking through the snow as we do not have a way around the issues created by the snowbanks. Also, classes often go outside for their break or for PE when the weather is warm enough. Even though they are a little older, they still love to play in the snow!
As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

In January, we have focused on the Positivity Project traits of Optimism, Prudence, and Perseverance. We continue to explore the ´Other People Matter Mindset,´ specifically in regards to different ways in which we can support others when they struggle. Click here to view this famous speech in which Martin Luther King Jr. talks to students about the importance of having a sound blueprint in life.

Band Notes
Lessons:
Band lessons are continuing to go well this year! The lesson schedule is emailed out each month and posted on the Google Classroom for students to reference at any time. If students forget their lessons, all they need to do is send me an email and we can schedule a make up lesson! I know this is a crazy year; so I have built in some time for make up lessons each day.
After School Band:
Even though we are not currently preparing for a concert, band rehearsals after school are going really well. It’s great to be able to play as a (small, socially-distanced) group again! There are a few spots available for students who still wish to join. Please email me for information: cbennett@cortlandschools.org
Miscellaneous:
If any remote learners are having any issues with broken instruments, or are in need of supplies (valve oil, reeds), please contact me. I would be happy arranging a way to get the instrument repaired or getting supplies to you!
Also, please encourage your kids to do a little bit of practicing on their instruments outside of lessons. It’s a great way to get them away from screens for a little bit!

Mrs. Snyder's Class Project
Distance learning students in Mrs. Snyder´s 5th grade class are participating in a ´Flat Snyder´ project this month. They have the opportunity to participate in a variety of academic and non-academic activities with her. This is just one of the ways in which we can strengthen the school/home connection.

Art News
Students have finished their “Album Cover of Your Life” projects. In this project students chose songs that represent events in their life and used them to create symbols and colors. They then used these to collage together some album artwork.

We are now starting “Famous Mosaics” in which students will use Google Drawings to make a mosaic portrait of a celebrity of their choosing.

News from the School Counselor
Starting in February, 5th and 6th grade students will begin career exploration. In 5th grade, students will have the chance to explore their personality and identify future careers in which they may be interested. In 6th grade, students will identify six different career clusters, possible jobs in each cluster, and the education needed for those jobs. Each student will have a career portfolio that will follow them to the Junior Senior High School. We will continue career lessons throughout the rest of the year!

News from the School Librarian
Sixth grade students have been learning how to determine if a news article is credible or a fake. I use a great resource called Common Sense Media which offers media reviews on websites, books, movies, etc.
Since 2003, Common Sense has been the leading source of entertainment and technology recommendations for families and schools. Every day, millions of parents and educators trust Common Sense reviews and advice in order to help them navigate the digital world with their kids. Together with policymakers, industry leaders, and global media partners, they’re building a digital world that works better for all kids, their families, and their communities.
I have added a link below to help kids spot fake news and decode media messages. Try it out together as a family!
