February 2021 Updates
PRESIDENT'S NOTES
Delaware is the Eastern Gateway to the United States and World Trade Center Delaware is the Key. ™

I am often asked by an entrepreneur or small company, particularly those in the service or research sectors, why they should join the World Trade Center Delaware. What benefits do we offer that make us unique? In fact, I was recently interviewed on this topic via Facebook live by Jaimie Watts, Director of Events for the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce (You can view the video for more info on the NCC Chamber’s Facebook page).

The state’s strategic location, position as the “Corporate Capital of the World,” and reputation as the home of world-class innovation and research, combine to make Delaware the Eastern Gateway to the United States. World Trade Center Delaware is the key because we can unlock opportunities for local companies to expand their business far beyond the US borders.

Our strength in numbers is yours. As a member of the World Trade Center Delaware, you have instant access to the entire World Trade Centers Association network.  There is no other global organization offering customized international export and import services and increased visibility across the globe from more than 320 trade centers in 100 countries, with over 15,000 employees and one million affiliated companies around the world. In addition, we are an official partner to US government agencies, multilateral donors, and international organizations, and can offer additional services and resources not otherwise found in the region.

As a member, you can proudly display the World Trade Center Delaware logo that shows you have the resources of the entire World Trade Centers Association behind you. Buyers and suppliers respect the brand. So, become a member of World Trade Center Delaware. You are serious about trade and so are we.

Sincerely,
Carla Sydney Stone

Walker Brothers, Inc.
Pictured l to r: Dr. Wenjing Chen, Scott and Michael Walker of Walker Brothers, Inc.
Congratulations and welcome to Walker Brothers, Inc. for becoming a new World Trade Center Delaware member! Walker Bros, Inc. is the world’s largest producer of high-quality green asparagus hybrid seed, is one of the largest asparagus crown producers in the U.S. and has forty-seven years of asparagus production experience. Walker Bros. Inc. is a family-owned agricultural business in operation since 1845. Brothers Scott and Michael Walker and their cousin Jim Walker are fifth-generation owners that have experience and knowledge of all aspects of the asparagus industry, striving to produce high quality hybrid asparagus seed and provide customers from around the world with outstanding knowledge and customer service.

The Walker Brothers portfolio includes both green and purple hybrid asparagus varieties, i.e. Apollo F1, Atlas F1™, Grande F1™, UC 157 F1 and Purple Passion F1. They are well known for their heat and drought resistance and are being successfully grown on every continent except for Antarctica for thirty years. The company also developed its newest male hybrid asparagus variety, the Walker Deluxe F1, for cool to warm climates. Climate change demands have been forcing growers of all crops to adapt to increasingly difficult growing conditions. With nearly a half-century of experience in asparagus, Walker Bros. Inc. understands the importance of developing more efficient varieties that give consistent and high-quality yields that offer both sustainable and profitable returns. The Walker Breeding Program is currently focusing its efforts on developing new hybrids that offer high marketable yields, consistent spear size and quality, disease resistance and good flavor, while also looking to the future trends of asparagus production. So far, new trials in 17 countries have been established to test new hybrids from the Walker Breeding Program. Preliminary results obtained from these trials in countries with tropical and sub-tropical climates look promising.

Walker Bros. Inc. started their international expansion since 2017 when Dr. Wenjing Chen joined the team. As the Assistant General Manager and International Representative for Walker Bros, Inc., Dr. Chen, who is fluent in four languages, travels to different countries to educate growers about Walker Bros varieties and works with growers to set up asparagus trials. In 2020, the company also invited Dr. Pedro Cisneros Zevallos from Peru to become their team member. With twenty-three years of practical experience in the green and white asparagus industry, Dr. Zevallos represents Walker Bros, Inc. in the South American region and supports asparagus growers there. Katie Ralston, another team member of Walker Bros, Inc., lives in the US and is currently in charge of the company’s digital marketing activities.

“Joining World Trade Center Delaware just made sense since we are doing more and more international business all the time,” said Sales and Marketing Manager Scott Walker. “We know the resources and contacts available through the World Trade Center network will be invaluable. We also believe that the WTC Delaware will help us gain new markets, including Asia, South America and Africa, and continue spreading our premium quality asparagus hybrids and decades of asparagus knowledge and experience to the world, particularly to those countries that do not grow our varieties currently.”

Walker Bros. Inc, has been working with farmers for over 100 years. The company has developed valuable relationships with their customers that have flourished for generations. With their international team of asparagus experts, the company has also adapted to meet the needs of their customers in the modern age while still providing the level of customer care and attention that stems from their founding family values.

“Are You Ready for Blockchain?” Virtual Presentation Hosted by
World Trade Center DE Rescheduled to Feb. 26, to Feature Michael Marquardt

A teleconference titled “Are You Ready for Blockchain?” featuring Michael Marquardt, the CEO of Global Kompass Strategies, Inc., will be hosted by the World Trade Center Delaware February 26 at 1:30 pm ET to give an overview of this exciting new data technology platform and discuss its importance to local businesses and international trade.

The importance of businesses learning about the concept of Blockchain now is similar to the time when the Internet and e-Commerce were emerging back in the late nineties, says Marquardt, who has served as a Blockchain advisor to the State of Delaware and has been a Global Advisor to the Delaware Prosperity Partnership. “The reason they need to know about it is to be able to determine whether it might impact their business and enable them to deliver a higher level of customer service, reduce their costs and offer services or products they couldn’t before. It’s better to be in on what’s coming earlier rather than later.”

World Trade Center Delaware President Carla Stone urges state business owners and leaders in a variety of fields to attend the event including those in IT, finance, insurance, law, accounting, and more. They can expect to learn what Blockchain is and what it means for their businesses and international trade and best practices for its use, as well as find out about additional resources.

Midnight Oil Brewing Company, located across the street from UCP, has been producing small batch beer since 2018. These beers feature the taste and quality of international beers, without the need to purchase an airline ticket. The beer for this event has been chosen to compliment the taste of the chocolate.

“This is one of our most popular events. We didn’t want to disappoint our chocolate and beer fans” said, Carla Stone, President of World Trade Center Delaware. All of the attendees will be able to ask the experts questions and chat with other participants.

INTERNATIONAL DELAWARE
International Delaware Magazine Released by World Trade Center Focuses on FinTech in the First State

The World Trade Center Delaware has released its fourth edition of International Delaware Magazine which focuses on Delaware's growing FinTech industry.

“Little did we know when we first discussed the theme for this issue just how timely this edition would be,” said World Trade Center Delaware President Carla Stone. “The use of IT and e-commerce exploded during the past eight months as people sought to limit contact with others in an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It is clear that financial technology services, or FinTech, is here to stay and will only grow in the future.”

The foundation for FinTech in Delaware was laid in 1981, when then-Gov. Pierre S. du Pont IV signed the Financial Center Development Act, legislation designed to increase employment in the banking and financial services sector by attracting out-of-state institutions to establish subsidiaries in Delaware. Today, Delaware, despite its tiny population, is one of the world's great financial centers. Over 75% of all FinTech investment in the Philadelphia region is found in Delaware and it has the highest concentration of financial services employment in the entire country according to a study by Delaware Prosperity Partnership. The study, "Delaware in a FinTech Future," reported that Delaware ranks No. 1 per capita for the number of FinTech patents issued over the past ten years in the U.S. and No. 5 overall.

Discover Bank, this issue's presenting sponsor, is making a significant contribution to Delaware's FinTech future. In partnership with the University of Delaware and Delaware Technology Park, Discover is building a new 100,000-square-foot center for FinTech innovation on the university's Science Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus that will combine the prowess of academia, government, and industry to support and grow FinTech's future in Delaware. “We thank Discover and all of our partners who have made this issue of International Delaware possible,” Stone said. “Tens of thousands of readers around the world will learn what we already know: FinTech is the future of commerce and Delaware is its home.”
