A recent article in the Ottawa Business Journal highlights how the food processing industry has taken on a growing role in the Eastern Ontario’s economic landscape.

The article explains that a vast array of innovators are growing, harvesting, processing and transforming agricultural products and byproducts into food and drink items that end up across the province, country, and even around the world. The piece goes on to profile seven individuals and their entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm.
Event Barns in Ontario

The Golden Horseshoe Food and Farm Alliance has released a position paper on Event Barns in Ontario.

The paper explains the background of family farming and on-farm diversification, introduces the concept of event barns, provide examples, and identifies development requirements, processes and costs for establishing event barns in Ontario.

The paper also provides a position on event barns, and identifies next steps to assist family farmer entrepreneurs and local governments in balancing event barn opportunities while also preserving Ontario’s agricultural lands.

2022 Farmland Forum
Ontario Farmland Trust is hosting the 17th annual Farmland Forum virtually on March 24, 2022!

Discussions throughout the day will explore how humans, plants, and animals can work harmoniously to produce agricultural commodities, create ecosystem services, and combat climate change.

David Phillips, CM, Senior Climatologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada, will kick off the day with a keynote presentation on the status of the climate in Canada, necessary mitigation strategies and the importance of protecting land in its present state.

Evan Fraser, PhD, Director of the Arrell Food Institute and Professor of Geography at the University of Guelph, will raise awareness on global food security issues, introduce cutting-edge agri-food technology and dive further into the great challenge of sustainability.

New Wage Subsidy Program
Agriculture employers across Canada can now take advantage of a new wage subsidy program aimed at introducing post-secondary students to careers in agriculture and agri-food. 

The Growing Opportunities program funded by the Government of Canada and administered by the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC) provides up to $7,500 per hire and runs to March 2022. Learn more.
A Circular Food Economy
Our Food Future has released a new video sharing what the movement in Guelph-Wellington is all about — bringing people, ideas, and technology together to build Canada's modern circular food economy.

The video explains their vision to move away from a linear food system and toward a circular economy ecosystem, for the betterment of planet, economy and communities. Our Food Future is reimagining how we produce, distribute, sell and consume food. The video shares how they're working to strengthen communities, lead research and programs to address food insecurity, accelerate circular business solutions, reduce food waste, and guide system change.
