Lent is a special time. As Christians, it’s a time to engage the Living God through intentional times of prayer, fasting, contemplation, meditation, worship and other disciplines that foster intimacy with Christ.
Lent provides an opportunity to intentionally abstain, for a prescribed time period, from something that is natural, necessary, and normal for you. We fast so that we may engage prayer, meditation, reflection, contemplation, and worship of the Living God. Deeper practices of such spiritual disciplines can enrich your relationship with Christ, as you seek to love and serve God and your neighbor.
Lent in 2022 will be observed from Ash Wednesday through Holy Thursday (March 2nd – April 14th, excluding Sundays) and commemorates when Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tested before the start of his earthly ministry [Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:11-13, Luke 4:1-14].
During Lent, CJI invites you to go deeper in your relationship with Christ. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and each Wednesday during Lent, we will post a devotion for reflection. You are invited to engage Scripture through a lens of compassion and justice. It is our hope that each weekly devotional will assist you in gaining greater understanding of the heart of God for compassion, justice and the immigrant. You are encouraged to use the devotions for reflection. We hope the heart of every reader will grow, and with grace we will embrace more deeply the heart of God for compassion, justice and immigrants. We pray your faith journey will lead to growth outwardly and inwardly. Like Jesus, there will be times of testing but remember:
“No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it”
– 1 Corinthians 10:13 NRSV
As you engage this journey, be assured The Lord is with you.
