February 2022: News, Updates, & Resources
Pastors, leaders and friends of the District,

You may remember from Pastor Sam’s first District Assembly in May of 2019, he outlined a series of outcomes that would define his vision for the Metro New York District under his leadership. These outcomes are designed to provide a guideline for how we can live out our mission and vision as a people called Nazarenes at this time and in this place to “bear witness through word and deed of God’s transforming grace.”

As a district leadership team, we have embraced these 7 outcomes as they have allowed us to clarify our purpose in service to you and believe there is value in digging into each one more fully over the next few months. Our hope is for you to gain wisdom and understanding that may prove helpful as you lead your own leadership and volunteer teams within your ministry, providing a district-wide synergy that can only bring glory to God.

We will explore each outcome below via this newsletter, our website and social media platforms, so be sure you are connected in some way!
Lent is a special time. As Christians, it’s a time to engage the Living God through intentional times of prayer, fasting, contemplation, meditation, worship and other disciplines that foster intimacy with Christ.

Lent provides an opportunity to intentionally abstain, for a prescribed time period, from something that is natural, necessary, and normal for you. We fast so that we may engage prayer, meditation, reflection, contemplation, and worship of the Living God. Deeper practices of such spiritual disciplines can enrich your relationship with Christ, as you seek to love and serve God and your neighbor.

Lent in 2022 will be observed from Ash Wednesday through Holy Thursday (March 2nd – April 14th, excluding Sundays) and commemorates when Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tested before the start of his earthly ministry [Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:11-13, Luke 4:1-14].

During Lent, CJI invites you to go deeper in your relationship with Christ. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and each Wednesday during Lent, we will post a devotion for reflection. You are invited to engage Scripture through a lens of compassion and justice. It is our hope that each weekly devotional will assist you in gaining greater understanding of the heart of God for compassion, justice and the immigrant. You are encouraged to use the devotions for reflection. We hope the heart of every reader will grow, and with grace we will embrace more deeply the heart of God for compassion, justice and immigrants. We pray your faith journey will lead to growth outwardly and inwardly. Like Jesus, there will be times of testing but remember:

No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it”
– 1 Corinthians 10:13 NRSV

As you engage this journey, be assured The Lord is with you.

Half-Million Mobilization

The Half-Million Mobilization is a Call to Pray and a Call to Speak for the future of our denomination and our local churches in Canada and the United States. Pray for the protection, direction, and revelation of the Spirit on our ministries together. Our prayer is to see renewal and a resurgence of the Nazarene Church and holiness message in our people. The Call to Speak is a prayer response/survey to gather feedback on what the Spirit says to the church during this time of prayer.

On March 1st, let's join together as Pastors and Leaders within the Nazarene Church to pray for the future of the Church. Learn more in the video below or by clicking here.

District Assembly 2022

The hybrid District Assembly will be held on Saturday, April 9th at the Far Rockaway Church of the Nazarene and online via Zoom. The Business Session will open at 8:30AM and conclude around 1PM. The Ordination Service will be held at 3:00PM.

Invites will be sent to the candidates for ordination and first district license to attend in person, as well as the District Advisory Council, Board of Ministry, and District Staff.

Delegates will be given access to the Assembly via ZOOM; guests will be given a link to view the two sessions via the Internet.

Voting by delegates will be electronic. We will be voting on General Assembly Delegates, new District Advisory Board members, and other strategic votes.

Rev. Dr. Gustavo Crocker is our jurisdictional General Superintendent and will host both of these sessions. Ordinands will meet with him via ZOOM on Thursday evening, April 7th.

Our COVID protocol, as we know it now, will require all those attending in person to be either fully vaccinated or receive a negative COVID test within three days of Assembly. In addition, we anticipate requiring masks to be worn for those gathering in-person.

We look forward to gathering with you both in person and online!
