Monitoring Dalles Mountain Prairie’s response to grazing and wildfire

It was a sunny and windy May day as Denise and I met Bob Hansen - longtime friend of IAE (and former board member). With his usual welcoming smile, he was waiting for us with step ladders to climb over fences in dignified fashion. With abundant wildflowers framing our views of Mount Hood and the Columbia Gorge, we were constantly remarking on how lucky we were to be here on this beautiful day! Read More
2021 update on the endangered Fender’s blue butterfly
By Soledad Diaz

Fender’s blue butterfly (Icaricia icarioides fenderi) was listed as an endangered species in 2000 due to habitat fragmentation and prairie habitat loss throughout its range in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Since 2016, IAE has played a major role in the conservation of Fender’s blue by conducting annual population surveys, restoring key habitat, and investigating population responses to restoration. Large-scale grazing study begins that could restore sage-grouse habitat

The greater sage-grouse almost landed on the endangered species list a few years ago.

Despite not being listed in 2015, the bird still faces threats to its existence.

A new research project east of Bend hopes to find a way to restore grouse habitat while the Bureau of Land Management reviews its sage-grouse conservation plan. Read More
Staff Spotlight: Laura Estrada
Laura Estrada is IAE's Conservation Research Technician, who graciously answered our questions while preparing for a busy field season.
IAE: What has been your favorite thing about working for IAE so far?
LE: By far my favorite thing about working for IAE if the overall community of IAE, I get the opportunity to work with some of the most brilliant minds. IAE as whole not only works to take care of our planet through conservation, habitat restoration, and education, they also work towards creating a safe and inclusive work environment. As a technician there is sometimes a worry that your voice won’t be heard, this is not the case at IAE. I feel like I am treated with respect and am given the opportunity to let my voice be heard. I am excited to continue working with the entire IAE community and to further develop as a professional in this field.
IAE: What's a moment from your work so far that really stands out?
LE: The moments that truly stand out to me are when we have our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) meetings. It warms my heart witness all of us working on improving ourselves as an organization and as individuals. One meeting that stands out to me is when we talked about our pronouns and the importance of appropriate pronoun use. This meeting gave me the confidence to address my own gender fluidity and to give me the comfort to know that I would continue to be respected and heard at our workplace. As an organization, I see that we are working toward being more inclusive toward a large diversity of individuals, allowing us to only strengthen the culture within our workplace.
Brief Updates
Southwest Office
This winter we began tackling the long-awaited and ominous task of organizing our in-house herbarium. This herbarium is an important reference for plant identification and holds specimens from particular plant populations we have worked with. This work involves mounting and labeling specimens, entering specimen information into a database, and filing systematically into cabinets. To help with this effort we were lucky to welcome volunteer Renée Galeano-Popp, a botanist with decades of experience with the U.S. Forest Service, author of the beautiful field guide "Trees of Fort Collins", and founder of Project Pine Cone. Renée brings a wealth of knowledge and stories that we love hearing and learning from while working together on this important effort.
