ARTICLE OF THE MONTH: How Good Leadership Can Impact Employees' Innovative Behavior by Richard van Hooijdonk
There’s increasing pressure on organizations to be more competitive, and leaders need to have the right skills to influence employees’ innovative behavior.
GOOD LEADERSHIP is an important element in the success of any organization. Having effective leaders can help a company achieve its goals and maximize efficiency. In most cases, leaders have a profound influence on their employees. Besides helping them better handle workplace-related challenges, leaders evoke innovation and creativity and inspire them to reach their full potential.
There’s been a lot of debate on whether leadership skills can be acquired in life or the person must be born with them. The answer is both. There are some people who seem to be born with great leadership skills, as well as those who developed them later in life. To encourage employees to become more innovative, leaders need to pay attention to a number of issues.
Marco Mucciacciaro has been with the Town of South Windsor since April 30th of 2018. Since being hired on as an
Associate Manager, Marco has been promoted to Manager of the Streets Division and just recently Superintendent. In this time frame he has also become the Town’s Tree Warden and attended a course to become the compost operations manager as well. Prior to coming to South Windsor, he worked for the Town of Windsor cumulatively for 11 years as a Maintainer 2 and a Maintainer 3. Marco came to South Windsor with a wealth of knowledge that he picked up from the private sector as foreman, estimator and supervisor for a major bridge and dam contractor in Connecticut.
Marco received a Bachelor of Science degree with a Major in Accounting from Central Connecticut State University. With this degree he spent 5 years as an accountant/bookkeeper for Fortune 500 companies. All this experience combined gives Marco a unique set of skills not generally found together. Even with all of this experience, Marco still strives to better his skillset and has been an active participant in many of the T2 Center’s educational programs. Marco graduated from both the CT Road Master and CT Road Scholar Programs in 2019. That same year Marco was a keynote speaker at the annual T2 Center graduation ceremony. Marco is currently a member of the CT Transportation Leadership Program’s Cohort #7.
Mr. Mucciacciaro has been instrumental in South Windsor, revitalizing their spot milling and paving program, formulating an in-house inventory job costing data base, and tackling a myriad of different challenging construction projects. Married for 17 years to a social services professional, he has two young daughters with whom he is very active, coaching different soccer teams and shuttling to swim meets.

NEW Tailgate Talk: 5 Ways to Motivate Employees to Work Safely
Management can establish all the safety policies and procedures in the world, but when it comes right down to it, maintaining safety and health in any workplace depends on the workers themselves. When we fail to recognize and promote the benefit of safety, chances are pretty good that it's going to show up on the accident and injury records. This ultimately increases our premium for Workers' Compensation coverage, adds to the cost of repairing and maintaining equipment, and may severely impact the lives of employees and their families.
So it is more than just important to implement the best techniques for motivating your people to work safely; it is absolutely critical. Some of the most effective techniques involve communication. Simply put, you need to establish or build employee awareness of safety in the workplace and out on the job.
