BIKE SAFETY TIPS
If you're a cold and wet weather wimp like me, your bike may be in storage waiting for better weather. Bur no matter when you get on your bike next, consider these tips from a Reddit post.
- Moving reflectors say "CYCLIST AHEAD!" Reflectors on pedals, shoes, tights, etc.
- A headlight is more important. Although they make great headlines, getting smashed from behind is less a concern than a driver failing to yield right-of-way. A daytime visible headlight will help alert drivers of your approach, though they still misjudge my speed and might pull out if they think they have time.
- Taillights are just as important in the daytime. Texting, social media, phone calls, DUI, they all distract beyond our minds already inability to remain 100% focused 100% of the time. It's a "response" I'm hoping for from approaching drivers using Daytime Visible Taillights, not a "last second reaction."
- Redundancy is key; two taillights are better than one. Keep one on steady for drivers to better judge depth as they approach from behind, and keep a second on blink to grab their attention from far enough away to garner a response, not a reaction. Helmet mounted taillights are high-up and most visible to drivers from their perspective. Reflective elements help. So do lights, sufficiently bright enough to be seen by distracted drivers behind dirty windshields oblivious to the potential presence of cyclists ahead.
- During the daylight hours, including twilight and dawn, colors matter. In the dark, unless you're wearing white, fluorescent green or yellow, color is largely insignificant.
- Surviving the odds is the game. Route choice is critical. Don't feel safe? Find another way. Your life may depend on it.
STAY SAFE OUT THERE. THE WORLD NEEDS YOU.

. . . and Now For Some Good News
1) Researchers have developed a smart and super-efficient new way of capturing carbon dioxide and converting it to solid carbon, to help advance the decarbonisation of heavy industries.
2) Order free at-home Covid tests
Go online to put in your order for free tests sent to your home from Washington DC HERE.
3) A second grader wrote his own story about Christmas and decided to share it with the world. He took it the his town's library and placed it on the shelf. The book now has a year-long waiting list to check it out. Check out the whole story HERE.
4) Love butterflies? One year ago the migration count for monarch butterflies across 283 US sites was around 2000 butterflies. This year, the count exceeded 250,000. We still have some work to do to get back to the levels of 40 years ago when they were estimated to exceed 40 million. Here's some ideas of how to help:
- Plant native milkweed species.
- Plant a diversity of nectar plants (look below this map to see the plant list for your area in the US).
- Stop using pesticides, or minimize risk associated with pesticide use.
- Contribute to community science projects, like iNaturalist, that track monarchs, and the food mapper for Western Monarch Milkweed.
- Visit Xerces.org to learn more about monarchs and find additional ways to help.
5) Leah Lizarondo launched 412FoodRescue.org in 2015 to redirect food from the waste stream directly to households and nonprofits. To make that pivotal connection, she created an app that gives volunteers pick-up locations for food surplus and those who need it.
The app, FoodRescueHero is now used by a growing team of 25,000 volunteer drivers in 15 cities. Together with 800 food retailers, they have turned more than 70 million pounds of surplus into nearly 57 million meals—and mitigated more than 30 million lbs. of CO2. Full story HERE.

Confused About all the Mask Choices?
|
The Seattle Times published the results of a study on mask efficacy for Covid, and the image to the right is a visual of those results. The study was done before Omicron, so the study did not include that variant data.
