Meeting Multiple Challenges Head On!
Dawne is a self-described determined woman, unafraid of a challenge. Similarly, unwilling to see her three school-age grandchildren placed into foster care, she accepted the challenge of assuming custody.

As the coronavirus began its grip across the region, she suddenly became unemployed. With the expectation that she would soon return to work, combined with a nest egg and unemployment payments, she pressed onward with classwork to become a certified medical coder.
As the shutdown continued, she began seeking other opportunities. However, a severe fall and injury led to the need for surgery, which made her immobile. Unable to work, and despite help from her family, bills began to stack up and it was becoming increasingly difficult to buy groceries.

“I never imagined being in position that I would need to ask for help,” said Dawne, explaining how she’s grateful for being able to turn to
Frisco Family Services.”

She added that the level of support received — financial AND emotional — was “truly an exceptional blessing". The support Dawne received provided the bridge she needed to transition from unemployment to Supplemental Security Income. It allowed her to maintain a stable household for her grandchildren and herself.

“It’s humbling to ask for help, but with this community…a bad situation blossomed into a beautiful one.”

Dawne has since resumed taking classes and is determined to achieve her goal of becoming a certified medical coder with plans to work from home.

February is Heart Health Month
Did you know that according to the American Heart Association, about
1 in 3 deaths worldwide can be attributed to cardiovascular disease?

With February designated as American Heart Month, the Frisco Family Services Market launched a comprehensive wellness campaign that highlights the fresh produce, heart-healthy food, and recipes the Market has available.
A wide selection of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Blood pressure monitors and related educational materials.
Grab and Go red bags filled heart-healthy items.
Clients are encouraged to seek out the Market’s specially tagged heart-healthy items as well as take a red bag filled with the same.

In collaboration with Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Centennial, blood pressure monitors are made available to clients without one at home. Also, during select times, a nurse is present to share information about cardiovascular disease and to answer questions.

The focused campaign will continue through the end of February.

Expanding Senior Programming
For 2022, Frisco Family Services has set a goal to expand programming for our +55 clients by offering additional social opportunities such as the Valentine’s Day Bingo social event held on Monday, February 14. The event featured a brief Q&A segment on heart disease, provided by Cardiac Nurse Christopher Lee from Texas Health Frisco.
