February 2022
We’re celebrating Black History Month this February at Northshire with lots of staff picks from Black authors, on African-American history, about Antiracism, and an event with the celebrated Vermont author of children’s and Young Adult books, Kekla Magoon for her multi-award-winning new book. Revolution in Our Time: The Black Panther Party’s Promise to the People is a Coretta Scott King Author Award Honor Book, a National Book Award Finalist, a Michael L. Printz Honor Book, and a Walter Dean Myers Honor Book. On Wednesday, February 9th she will join us to discuss her book with fellow award-winning children’s author Steve Sheinkin. If you can’t make it, don’t worry our event will air later on C-SPAN 2!

We were delighted to see that some of our favorite books from last year were listed by the New York Times on their best books of 2021 list including Annette Gordon-Reed’s On Juneteenth, Andrea Elliott’s Invisible Child, Honorée Fanonne Jeffers’ The Love Songs of W.E.B. DuBois. If you haven’t read Tiya Miles’ All that She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake, it’s a staff pick many times over and out it in paperback today. Another staff pick, Patrisse Cullors’ An Abolitionist’s Handbook, was published last week. And finally there are a lot of us here reading, about to read, or just finished reading Booker Prize-winner Marlon James’ Moon Witch, Spider King (out February 15th), the follow-up to his bestselling Black Leopard, Red Wolf. James does with African mythology and storytelling what Tolkien did with Germanic mythology and George R.R. Martin did with British history and geography-–mad kings, love & heartbreak, shapeshifters, and glorious world-building; it’s a delight to return to this wholly original Afrofantasy.

From Marlon James, author of the bestselling National Book Award finalist Black Leopard, Red Wolf, the second book in the Dark Star trilogy "masterfully flips the first installment on its head (Esquire)" and is "even more brilliant than the first (Buzzfeed)."

"What a joy to return to the wholly original Afrofantasy world of Booker-winner Marlon James’ Dark Star Trilogy. Moon Witch, Spider King–which can be read as a standalone–offers a Rashomon-like perspective on the events of Black Leopard, Red Wolf, but that is only a fraction of the Moon Witch Sogolon’s life. From her origins as an abused girl in a termite hill to an attendant in the royal court to the explosive discovery of her fickle powers, this book offers unparalleled world-building and character development with James’ remarkable, defamiliarizing prose. Drawing inspiration from mythology, pre-colonial history, and the different tropes and beats of African storytelling, James yet again (and maybe even better than before) does what Tolkien did for Germanic mythology and GRRM did for British history and geography. Mad kings, shapeshifters, love & heartbreak, shocking violence, strong-girl-bildungsroman, water sprites, scary nuns, and the sangomin–maybe his greatest contribution, a genuinely scary assortment of monstrous mutant children turned assassins." ~ Reviewed by Dafydd Wood

Pre-order Highlight

The award-winning, best-selling author of Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel returns with a novel of art, time, love, and plague that takes the reader from Vancouver Island in 1912 to a dark colony on the moon five hundred years later, unfurling a story of humanity across centuries and space.

"A young man travels back in time in an attempt to discover the cause of a momentary flash that has appeared to certain people in different centuries. He is strictly admonished by the Time Institute to do nothing that will alter the course of the future in any way. The punishment is being banished to one of the Far Colonies. Reading this fascinating novel is a little like finding your way through a complex maze and the light shining at the end will catch all but the most perceptive completely off guard. Very few authors could weave threads of a dystopian future, a devastating pandemic, time travel, and habitation in dome-covered worlds into a tapestry as dazzling as the one Emily St. John Mandel unfolds in Sea of Tranquility.." ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves
