President’s Message
Dear fellow AFP-GLAC Members and Friends,
Be Bold, be Brave and be Flexible!
This is the motto we are using to guide our planning for the chapter in 2022. In your own personal and professional roles, you are boldly CREATING new systems and rhythms, bravely EXPERIMENTING with ways to connect with donors, co-workers, collaborators and friends, and flexibly EVOLVING your ideas and plans as quickly and as often as needed. Change is inevitable, but it isn’t easy. There has never been a better time to lean into your professional support network at AFP-GLAC. We are in this together.
Looking Back to December 2021
In December, we held our first in-person event in nearly two years. Our holiday luncheon was a refreshing return to gathering in-person. But as happy as we were to be together again and to meet some of our NPD awardees and newer chapter members for the first-time off screen, we have resumed virtual programming to protect the safety of our members and guests. Until we meet again in-person, please stay connected virtually.
Looking Ahead to NPD 2022
To help you do just that, a talented and dedicated group of volunteer leaders have stepped up as our 2022 Board of Directors. I can tell you from personal experience, one of the best ways you can maximize your AFP membership and get to know your fellow members is to join a committee. Not sure where to start? Help us begin planning for our NPD (National Philanthropy Day) Conference and Awards to be held on October 28, 2022 in downtown Los Angeles. (SAVE THE DATE!) Feel free to reach out to me or any board member about how you can get involved.
Don’t Miss Educational Offerings
Our course the hallmark of AFP is educational programming. We kicked off the year with a session to help (some of you) finally take the plunge - How to Become a CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Professional) -everything you want to know about earning this important professional certification. In February, we planned Speed Mentoring (virtual edition) – a very popular and fast-paced interactive session for people in any stage of their fundraising careers. The good news is that we postponed this session (date TBD) so you can still sign up. On March 22, in collaboration with AFP - Orange County, our IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access) Committee will present Shift the Tide - a conversation about the experience of fundraisers of color and the concept of Allyship. Over the course of the year, we will be offering Advanced Forums, opportunities to Meet the Funders, a dive into professional ethics and more. Watch your inbox for announcements about monthly workshops and events you won’t want to miss.
Appreciation
On a final note, I would like to thank Mike Driebe, our past president, for his steady leadership during a very unpredictable year and his continued support (our current treasurer!) as I transition into my role. And I would like to thank each of you for investing in AFP! I encourage you to allocate time to get involved and connected and I look forward to our year ahead together.
Yvette Herrera, CFRE
AFP-GLAC Chapter President

|
The purpose of the Up & At ‘Em Job Club is for AFP-GLAC members and non-members to support and celebrate each other in their journey to a new professional, fundraising position. The club is made up of fundraising professionals whose positions may have been impacted by the pandemic or are otherwise seeking employment within the fundraising world. The membership is kept small to provide time for everyone to participate and build relationships.

Volunteers Needed: Want to Help? Here's How
|
|
As you know, volunteers make a nonprofit work, yours included. We couldn't do what we do without them. AFP-GLAC is also a nonprofit relying on volunteers. Yes, we have a paid management team, and they're wonderful, but they're more of a behind-the-scenes producer. We, the members, are responsible for organizing and executing most things, including social media, the website, fundraising, event planning, program planning, you name it. We, the members, do it.
We have needs in all areas, but we’ve heard special calls from board member committee chairs who need help with social media, education, and National Philanthropy Day. If you are interested in helping, please click the button below and fill out the form. If you’re unemployed, building your career, or are in the twilight stage, volunteering creates relationships, builds skills, and looks good on your LinkedIn page.
After you’ve looked at the form, and if you still have a question, please contact Mike Radice, VP for Philanthropy and Volunteers, via Radice_Mike@yahoo.com. Please put “AFP Volunteer Question” in the subject line.
Have a wonderful day.
