Canada: Single IDDSI-only labeling targeted for dysphagia products in Canada targeted for January 1, 2023. Regular communications are being shared with stakeholders to help prepare for IDDSI only labeling.
Here is the February reminder:
Supply Chain Havoc
One of the challenges of the January 1, 2023 target for adopting IDDSI only packaging terminology and ending the current dual diet system labels is the state of global supply chains. It is possible that your supply chain is intact and can still operate on tight turn-around times. But that is unlikely in today’s environment.
Now that it is less that 11 months to the January 1 target date, it is a good time to re-assess your timeline for the new labeling in light of global supply chain problems. Ask yourself these questions:
-
Are my packaging suppliers delivering on time? Or have they been having troubles?
-
Do I need to allow extra time for the delivery of new materials?
-
Should I accelerate the re-design process to allow my packaging suppliers more time to deliver my new packaging materials?
And even if you are not a supplier, you can ask your suppliers, “have you re-evaluated the time you need to meet the goal in light of current supply chain issues?”
Thanks to the hard work of the USIRG, the CIRG has now prepared a Powerpoint for Canadian audiences on IDDSI Language Usage Best Practices, available for download here. In addition, the February CAN DO newsletter is available here.

Modified textures are commonly used in long term care to address dysphagia and other eating challenges. Although intended to improve food and fluid intake and thus nutritional status, there are several issues that can arise when prescribing these texture modifications that can have both positive and negative outcomes for residents. Based on analyses of the Making the Most of Mealtimes prevalence study this presentation will provide an in-depth view of some of these issues and discuss implications for prescribing and designing modified texture foods and fluids in this setting.
