Once again, we close the door on February, the month of love (though aren’t they all?). In celebration of Black History Month, we reflected upon Black collectivists who have inspired us in our pursuit of a more cooperative society. We explored cooperatives as a tool for creating more inclusive communities. And we found connection and inspiration with fellow communitarians at The Commons. Each of these is an act of love. Love for one another, for community and for our future. With love, I think of labor. I think of the work it takes to grow something, to sustain and to nurture. To bring something to life, and to allow it to thrive. Here are a few ways CohoUS, and those in our midst, are working to nourish the cohousing movement.
Spring Programs
The Cohousing Institute is live and abundant with courses and programs to help you on your cohousing journey. With courses on financing, marketing and launching your community, we have the tools to empower and educate you and your fellow dreamers. We’ve even launched a course designed specifically for architects, led by Grace Kim!
Coalition for Racially Diverse Cohousing
We are pleased to launch the Coalition for Racially Diverse Cohousing which will support CohoUS in our pursuit of a more equitable cohousing movement. We seek individuals with experience in housing, racial justice work, community organizing and other relevant fields to join the coalition. Experience living in cohousing is not required. We aim to include a diverse set of perspectives and identities, recognizing that many of these identities have historically been left out, silenced, and marginalized within the cohousing movement. BIPOC individuals and people with marginalized identities are encouraged to apply. A detailed description of the coalition can be found here, and our application deadline has been extended to February 28.
Advocacy
Chuck Durrett of The Cohousing Company is making a push with the U.S. Congress to allow future residents of subsidized housing to play a role in the design and management of their affordable housing project. You can learn more about the effort and join in by writing letters to your congress person. Let us know how we can support your own advocacy efforts. All great change began when two people started talking!

CohoUS has joined forces with SAGE Senior Cohousing Advocates to form a CohoUS Senior Cohousing Advocates Committee. The committee will continue and expand on SAGE’s work to bring more information and resources to seniors living in cohousing and those contemplating it. We’ve created this new senior section in the e-news to highlight information and events of interest to seniors and others.
The committee needs your help!
We’re looking for story ideas from the trenches as well as volunteers to work on specific projects. The latter can range from contacting senior cohousing communities to find out how they’re addressing the challenges of aging, to helping us with future online Q&A sessions, workshops, etc. Read more here.
