Biosolids P +/-
By Dr. Sally Brown, University of Washington

Happy New Year and welcome back to the library.
I ‘ll be teaching a new class for NW Biosolids starting this week. This class goes back to basics with a focus on nitrogen and phosphorus. Getting ready for the class made me realize that it has been a long time since we covered P in a library. Biosolids are typically applied to meet the N needs of a crop. In many cases, that means adding more total P than a soil test would indicate is necessary. One the one hand, concerns about adding excess P are driving regulations in some areas, forcing applications to be made based on the P demand of the crops, if at all. On the other hand, we are facing concerns about running out of phosphorus. Peak Phosphorus is a thing, just like peak oil. In fact, the graph below is from a Peak Oil page

Research Short Story
There Is No Place Like Home

That is my take-home message from my time at the Australia and New Zealand Biosolids Conference; the down under version of Biofest. The conference is typically held every two years but this was the first time everyone had gotten together since the pandemic. In total, close to 180 people attended. There were many similarities to Biofest but also critical differences, and here I am not referring to the absence of microbrews.

Upcoming Training: ECHO Biosolids Tool Training on 3/14/23
|
There is an upcoming public training on EPA’s Enforcement and Compliance History Online (echo.epa.gov) Biosolids Facility Searches and Reports. This training focuses on the ECHO Facility Searches and Report under the Clean Water Act (CWA) National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program area biosolids. With the implementation of the NPDES Electronic Reporting Rule (eRule), facilities in the 41 states where EPA implements the Federal Biosolids Program, and three authorized states (SD, TX, UT) began submitting electronic reports for the first time. This training provides an overview of the electronic reporting of biosolids annual reports, describes the biosolids data available on EPA’s Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO), and includes a demonstration of navigating the Biosolids Facility and Annual Report search form, search results, and Biosolids Facility Report.
