Angela Lake first joined Literacy Network as an intern in Fall 2022. We are now thrilled to welcome her as our new Essential Literacy Program Manager! Angela brings the experience of teaching in the K-12 educational setting as an elementary school teacher, a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from UW-Madison, and currently also teaches courses in literacy at Madison College. Below, Angela shares a few thoughts about her new position with us at Literacy Network.
What is your role at Literacy Network?
I guide and support interns in lesson planning and student growth for Literacy Network's Essential Literacy Program. I also oversee student recruitment, intake, and progress for the program and support Essentials' connections with community partners.
Essential Literacy is a program for adults, usually native English speakers or high-level English language learners, who would like to build their reading, writing, and computer skills. In the Essentials Program, students work one on one with a tutor in a classroom setting once a week toward a variety of goals based on lesson plans created by our interns. Oftentimes, students’ goals are to strengthen literacy skills for employment, hone these skills for further education, or generally achieve independence and self-sufficiency.
What is the most satisfying aspect of working at LitNet?
I love watching students grow! Working with a variety of student languages, learning styles, and ages has been extremely rewarding. I have enjoyed learning about the educational experiences of our students and presenting them with opportunities to gain confidence in their literacy skills.
What is one thing you’re looking forward to in 2023?
In 2023, I aspire to delve deeper into understanding the literacy practices that work best for all students. I look forward to speaking about our program's opportunities with potential students and providing hope for greater success.
