Community Spotlight: El Camino to Host Annual Onizuka Space Science Day
Want to meet a NASA astronaut and a female Colonel in the U.S. Air Force?

Each year, the Ellison S. Onizuka Memorial Committee, El Camino College, and American Honda Motor Co., Inc. sponsor this free, hands-on conference for local students in grades 5-12. This year marks the 37th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident that took the lives of the seven crew members, including Ellison Onizuka.

Onizuka Space Science Day, funded in part by the El Camino College Foundation, will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2023 from 8 am to 2 pm at El Camino College, with an astronaut from NASA as the keynote speaker. Additionally, ECC is honored to have Colonel Mia Walsh, Commander, Space Base Delta 3 of the Los Angeles Air Force Base, lead a hands-on science demonstration. She was inspired to join the Air Force and ultimately pursue a career in the space field after Ellison Onizuka visited her elementary school in Hawaii when she was about seven years old. Read Colonel Mia Walsh's inspirational story HERE.

Department Spotlight: Forensics Team Headed to Japan for International Speech and Debate Tournament
Next month, El Camino's award-winning Forensics team will be competing in the International Forensics Association's 33rd Annual Speech and Debate Tournament and Conference in Tokyo, Japan. The tournament will be conducted in English and adhere to National and British Parliamentary formats.

At this time, the Forensics team is requesting the community's help to get there! After a presentation requesting funds for their trip, the ECC Foundation Board of Directors agreed to match all gifts to "double their donations." Therefore, to help sponsor the team's fundraising efforts, please GIVE HERE. Select "Other" from the Designation list and type "Debate" in the Comments field.

We would LOVE to help members of ECC's Forensics team travel to Tokyo, Japan and help them reach their goal twice as fast!
