Well, February certainly came in with an icy cold bang! Wow! I hope everyone is warm and safe. Although the shortest month, February seems to be packed with happenings and events. It’s Black History Month, American Heart Month, National Library Month, and National Snack Food Month (isn’t that every month?) just to name a few.
February has Valentine’s Day, Superbowl Sunday, Ground Hog Day, and MLB spring training. I’ve never seen so many adults get excited and line the streets as they do on the day the Red Sox equipment truck leaves for Jet Blue Park in Florida! With over 50 special days like National Dark Chocolate Day and National Kite Flying Day, Febraury is a busy month.
ALL is packed with happenings too. Spring semester classes have started with a variety of interesting and diverse subjects. Our gallery/lobby has a new display. Be sure to check out member Don Kolp’s paintings which are vivid and breathtaking. He captures the essence of his subjects and transmits genuine feeling through his work. The painting of his granddaughter running along the beach captures her sense of freedom and joy beautifully.
The Special Events Committee will host its first event of the semester, a talk by Stew Goodwin, on February 21st at 1:30 p.m.. Reflections, our art and literary magazine, for members, by members, will be ready this month. Filled with the writings and photographs of ALL members, it is a treasure trove of creativity. The Reflections launch party will be held on Thursday, February 23rd at 1 pm in the Atrium of the Lorusso Technology Building.
Please join us to hear some of the contributors to this year’s edition read their poetry, essays, memoirs, or stories. This magazine has been part of ALL for over twenty years, please come and see why.
Enjoy all our February happenings. See you soon,
F

Don Kolp developed a love for drawing and painting as a young boy. He obtained a B.S. in engineering from Case Tech, an M.S. from Colorado State University and an MBA from the University of Hartford. We invite you to enjoy his paintings in the ALL Gallery.
|
|
Don's engineering work entailed travel to various parts of the world providing him with a broad range of scenery and people to draw and paint. In 2004, Don and his wife Colleen retired to Cape Cod, allowing him to devote more time to painting local subjects as well as working from photographs taken during past and current travels.
Don paints both landscapes and portraits in oil with an emphasis on realism. While his specialty is portraits and figure painting, as depicted in “The Treasure Hunters” and “Pashtun Cherub”, he often finds and paints inspiring landscapes such as “Favorite Ride” (Brewster Grist Mill), all of which are currently on display here in the Academy for Lifelong Learning.
Don particularly enjoys bringing life into his paintings and sincerely hopes one or more of the paintings in this exhibit come to life for you.

February is the month when we show appreciation for those who enrich our lives. This is particularly true of ALL. We are an organization comprised of members who not only take classes, but who also join committees, coordinate classes, and encourage others to join. Unfortunately, we recently lost three people in the month of January who went above and beyond for ALL.
Frank Noonan, who had coordinated classes about writing spiritual memoirs and empathic negotiations, died in late January only a month after his wife Christine had passed away. He had been coordinating classes since 2019.
Nancy Yee, who was an active member, coordinator, and committee member for many years, passed away in late January also. Nancy had quite a following; she taught challenging courses dealing with themes and concepts found in Shakespeare and the Greek tragedies or other classics of literature. Nancy was an intelligent, caring, gracious woman who believed in the mission of ALL and did much to make ALL a success.
Many members will remember Gersh Rosenblum fondly. He taught a variety of classes at ALL over the years and recruited many new members and coordinators, including his son-in-law Chris Senie who currently teaches Bridge on Friday afternoons. Gersh had a zest for life and learning; he was a kind, generous, intelligent man who loved ALL. His family has asked that donations in his name can be mailed to Academy for Life Long Learning, Cape Cod Community College, 2240 Iyannough Rd., West Barnstable, MA 02668-1599.
We thank each of these members and all of you for how you enrich us with your presence.
