Habits ~ Who will I be, When I'm not who I was?

Dear Michael,

The trial is over! Last month I shared about my wife Sonia’s murder 41 years ago. Today the perpetrator, Michael Scott Glazebrook, is in prison for rape and first-degree murder. DNA does not lie! Many of you have sent congratulations and I am grateful for this outpouring of love and caring. You would think that it would be a time of jubilation for me and yes, I am overwhelmed with gratitude that justice has finally been served. The fact that the prosecution never gave up on Sonia’s case is a miracle and that my daughter Sasha, now 44, has seen her mother’s killer put away after four decades.

For me, these past few days since the verdict came in, have been disorientating, confusing, and an emotional roller coaster where I feel frozen in time and unable to complete simple daily tasks. I’ve been scattered, fragmented, avoidant, and indecisive. (All trauma response indicators) After so many years of defending myself against false accusations, libel, slander, and doubting who I can and can’t trust. And now the truth is out. I don’t have to prove my innocence or anything else for that matter. So, who will I be when I don’t have to defend myself?

I liken myself to the impoverished fellow who spends his life struggling financially, winning millions of dollars in the lottery, only to be broke a few short years later. The stories of our lives become habitual, invisibly shaping our perceptions of the world. If we are not attentive, we will continually live our lives from these embedded stories from the past, letting them shape and organize the ways in which we meet the world. To change our habitual and repetitive actions, thoughts, and the ways we meet the world, we must transform and reimagine our stories. Stepping into the unknown and uncontrollable future can be overwhelming, frightening, and immobilizing. This time for me, and I think likely for all of us, is a crossroads. The choices we make have never been more critical. A new order of thinking, acting, and being, beyond what we know and believe is being called forth from life itself. It is a time of questioning our conscious and unconscious habits. But, what is a habit?

In the mystical understanding, we say that every habit

is crystallized life energy.

Thomas Huebl

A habit is a fixed way of thinking, feeling, and acting, a routine behavior that is repeated regularly and generally happens unconsciously. We need habits to walk, remember and participate in daily activities and routines. But, habits are nonemergent and created by experiences from our past. They blind us from evolving, creating, and moving with the evolutionary changes of life, leaving us to do the same things over and over, expecting different results. Habits cost us the energy, creativity, and innovation to meet the greater challenges we face today, like climate change, racism, hunger, enslavement, income disparity, war, and divisiveness. Transcending our habitual behavior takes awareness, introspection, and the willingness to be disoriented, uncomfortable, confused, out of control, and not knowing what’s next… And this is where I am standing right now.

For now, I am allowing myself the luxury of non-doing, sitting, opening, and allowing myself to feel all the feelings that are emerging at this crossroads in my life. I don’t have a destination, although my ultimate goal is to be of service and used by a purpose greater than my own existence. How that will unfold is a mystery and I am opening myself fully to the unknown while challenging my own deeply held beliefs, thoughts, assumptions, words, and actions. Not knowing allows me to be more emergent, observant, and open to what is essential and truly important to me and therefore to the world. I am cultivating curiosity, wonder, and awe - while being grateful for the life I’ve been given including the precious seconds as they tick by, each one a snapshot of the unfolding of evolution itself.

Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.

 Lao Tzu

When I sit in stillness I can feel the movement of life and the miracle of just being alive. I am filled with gratitude for the awakening that is happening on our planet. You don’t see it in the media, but you can feel it in the wind. The Great Turning that Joanna Macy spoke of is here. It is a choice we make moment to moment that transcends our habits, opens our hearts, and startles us into awakening to our interconnection with all of life. Thank you for your partnership in the unfolding of a world that works for all life.

With love and blessings,

For One Who Is Exhausted, a Blessing

When the rhythm of the heart becomes hectic,

Time takes on the strain until it breaks;

Then all the unattended stress falls in

On the mind like an endless, increasing weight.

The light in the mind becomes dim.

Things you could take in your stride before

Now become laborsome events of will.

Weariness invades your spirit.

Gravity begins falling inside you,

Dragging down every bone.

The tide you never valued has gone out.

And you are marooned on unsure ground.

Something within you has closed down;

And you cannot push yourself back to life.

You have been forced to enter empty time.

The desire that drove you has relinquished.

There is nothing else to do now but rest

And patiently learn to receive the self

You have forsaken in the race of days.

At first your thinking will darken

And sadness take over like listless weather.

The flow of unwept tears will frighten you.

You have traveled too fast over false ground;

Now your soul has come to take you back.

Take refuge in your senses, open up

To all the small miracles you rushed through.

Become inclined to watch the way of rain

When it falls slow and free.

Imitate the habit of twilight,

Taking time to open the well of color

That fostered the brightness of day.

Draw alongside the silence of stone

Until its calmness can claim you.

Be excessively gentle with yourself.

Stay clear of those vexed in spirit.

Learn to linger around someone of ease

Who feels they have all the time in the world.

Gradually, you will return to yourself,

Having learned a new respect for your heart

And the joy that dwells far within slow time.
