The Continuous Learning Council welcomes professionals and subject matter experts to provide proposals for future educational sessions. Sessions can be virtual, in-person or hybrid throughout the year.

Mentoring Magic: Why Every Fundraiser Needs a Mentor | |

It’s a commonly accepted truth that fundraising is HARD. But we rarely talk about fundraising being LONELY. Too often development staff members are siloed from the rest of the organization or working by themselves in a single-person shop, or unable to meaningfully share with their boss or peers. One of the biggest contributors to burnout is the sense of isolation fundraisers feel. That’s why every fundraiser needs a mentor – someone they can reach out to when things get tough or when they just want to celebrate a huge win.

As someone who has run multiple fundraising leadership development programs, I believe that there’s something gratifying about the first time one of the participants says, “my board just won’t get excited about fundraising” and the entire room erupts in shared understanding.

Ready to be a mentor? The Peer Mentoring Committee is accepting applications for mentors in the Spring 2024 cohort now through Friday, February 23, 2024. These fundraisers with five or more years of experience will be matched with an early career fundraiser to develop a mentoring relationship over the following year. Learn more and apply.

Precious Claytor
Development Manager, VOA Illinois
Dedicated and enthusiastic, Precious Claytor is an emerging professional eager to make a positive impact in the nonprofit sector. As the Development Manager of VOA Illinois her focus areas are the agency's annual fundraising events, as well as special events internally and externally. Precious currently volunteers as the Sponsorship Coordinator for a local non-profit organization, You Matter 2 who hosts the largest Juneteenth festival in the south suburbs of Chicago annually.

Her love for non-profit work began after she received her degree in Bachelors of Social Work from Wright State University in Ohio. After 3 years of working in direct services with vulnerable populations, Precious decided she wanted to continue to make an positive change in her community but on a much larger scale. After realizing her talents for organizing events, donor relations and community drives, Precious found herself stepping towards field of Development work for nonprofits. Precious Claytor is committed to learning and applying innovative strategies to advance her knowledge in fundraising and philanthropy work.
