February 2024

Note from the President and CEO

To our CASAs,

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. It seems like the perfect time to say thank you for sharing your heart with the child you serve. It is no small thing to care about someone. Our team here at Voices for Children is always in awe of the creative and countless ways you demonstrate kindness and empathy to your assigned child.

If you need a dose of cuteness as we head toward February 14, you might enjoy this video featuring kids explaining what love is.

With appreciation, always,

Jessica Muñoz, Esq., MFS

President & CEO

Have You Read...

Shattered Bonds: The Color of Child Welfare

This is a stirring account of a worsening American social crisis--the disproportionate representation of black children in the U.S. foster care system and its effects on black communities and the country as a whole. Tying the origins and impact of this disparity to racial injustice, Dorothy Roberts contends that child-welfare policy reflects a political choice to address startling rates of black child poverty by punishing parents instead of tackling poverty's societal roots. Using conversations with mothers battling the Chicago child-welfare system for custody of their children, along with national data, Roberts levels a powerful indictment of racial disparities in foster care and tells a moving story of the women and children who earn our respect in their fight to keep their families intact. Featured Case of the Month

This month’s case is for a CASA who is willing to take a remote second case.

Lindsay is living in Simi Valley far away from everyone she knows. She is 15 and her courthouse is Indio. Lindsay was in dependency back in 2014, and then her maternal grandmother took legal guardianship of her. Now, she has rescinded that guardianship. Lindsay has a tendency of AWOLing from her placement daily and then returning. She can be verbally aggressive and struggles with following instructions at times, but she can be appropriate and friendly with others. Her mother and father are both whereabouts unknown. Lindsay was effectively abandoned and is living through the trauma that comes with that.

If you are interested in learning more about this case or considering taking another, please contact Sharon Morris.

CASA Kudos

Congratulations to our first CASA of the Month of 2024, Kim W! CASA Kim has been a consistent presence for Shay*, her assigned teen youth. For nearly two years, they have developed a strong bond over cooking and sharing meals. They have made sushi, crêpes, lo mein, and many other dishes. Knowing her youth loves to cook, CASA Kim has gone the extra mile to take Shay to a local community college with a culinary arts program and help her see her potential to incorporate cooking into her future goals.

Volunteers Needed

For the second year, VFC is partnering with The Roost Lounge in Cathedral City for a day of fundraising fun on Easter Sunday, March 31st. Both the brunch and dinner will include a live auction, which is sure to raise a lot of funds for VFC. This is where you come in. We are looking for CASAs who might be interested in helping solicit auction items and/or packaging the items into beautiful Easter baskets. If you are interested in helping or have contacts with businesses that may be willing to donate auction items, please email Brianna at BriannaM@speakupnow.org ASAP.

Fabulous Funder

For the fourth year, Voices for Children was awarded a grant from BIGHORN Cares, which funds specific projects for nonprofits that demonstrate a need and make a real difference in the quality of life for people in the Coachella Valley. BIGHORN Golf Club Charities, the parent organization of BIGHORN Cares, and its members have gifted over $400 million in funding to support wellness, education, elderly, and enrichment services to the public. The grantees were celebrated at the awards event held at The Vault in BIGHORN Golf Club. We are so grateful for this partnership!

What We're Reading

Each month we'll highlight a staff member's new favorite novel, movie, or podcast.

Our fantastic Advocacy Supervisor, Latisha Gary, is reading On Their Own: What Happens to Kids When They Age Out of the Foster Care System by Martha Shirk and Gary Stangler. Each year, as many as 25,000 teenagers "age out" of foster care, usually when they turn eighteen. What does it mean to be eighteen and on your own without the family support and personal connections that most young people rely on? For many youth raised in foster care, it means largely unhappy endings including sudden homelessness, unemployment, dead-end jobs, loneliness, and despair. On Their Own tells the compelling stories of ten young people whose lives are full of promise, but who face economic and social barriers stemming from the disruptions of foster care. Read these amazing stories on Amazon!

After you have finished reading, please contact your Advocacy Supervisor to receive continuing education credit and discuss your thoughts on the book!

Out & About

Advocacy Focus

February is American Heart Month! This presents a valuable opportunity to prioritize the cardiovascular well-being of your case children. CASAs can play a pivotal role in safeguarding young hearts by advocating for access to nutritious foods and encouraging regular physical activity. Additionally, promoting stress-relief activities and teaching coping mechanisms can help mitigate the emotional toll of navigating the dependency system, thereby fostering a healthier environment for the heart. Furthermore, you have the special role of being able to provide invaluable emotional support to your children, serving as a steadfast advocate and a comforting presence, shielding their hearts from the turbulence of uncertainty and ensuring they feel heard, valued, and loved. Reach out to your Advocacy Supervisor for any ideas on how to celebrate American Heart Month.

Deadlines & Reminders

Submit Your Mileage and Case Hours

Please submit this form no later than February 7 to your Advocacy Supervisor. Remember to include time spent driving to and from visits, attending meetings, and other CASA-related efforts.

Even if you did not drive last month, please submit the form with an estimation of hours spent calling, researching, and writing. This tally is a helpful way for us to quantify the advocacy investment each of you contributes to your case. Your child matters and the hours you spend on their case help to illustrate that reality.
