February 2024 Newsletter

Greetings Prevention Champions!

Welcome to the February Edition of the Henrico Area Prevention Services Monthly Newsletter!

🏆 Are you ready for Super Bowl LVIII? 🌟 Regardless of which team you're rooting for, it's essential to have a winning game plan against drunk driving. 🚨 In 2021, 13,384 traffic deaths involved drunk driving.

Let's play it smart and follow these keys to the game:

1️⃣ Know the Rules:

  - It's illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.

  - Law enforcement doesn't throw a yellow flag; they throw the playbook at you. Get pulled over, arrested, and prosecuted, costing about $10,000 on average.

2️⃣ Play It Safe:

  - Plan for a sober ride. Taxis, ride shares, public transportation, or designated drivers are your winning plays.

3️⃣ Be a Party MVP:

  - Volunteer to be a designated driver. Be there for your team with a safe and sober ride home.

4️⃣ If You've Been Drinking, You're Benched:

  - No place on the road for anyone who's been drinking. Help them find a sober ride home.

5️⃣ Be the Head Coach When Hosting:

  - Take care of designated drivers, provide plenty of food and non-alcoholic drinks, and intercept keys before drinking.

👊 We all share the same game plan against drunk driving. Always buckle up—your seat belt is your best defense in a crash. 🛡️👍 Stay safe and enjoy the game responsibly!

High blood pressure is often called the silent killer. A person might not have symptoms, but it’s a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Monitoring your own blood pressure at home can help you keep your blood pressure under control. Did you know? A CDC study showed that about 1 in 25 youth ages 12 to 19 have hypertension, and 1 in 10 has elevated blood pressure. High blood pressure is more common in youth with obesity.

In the spirit of American Heart Month, let's prioritize our cardiovascular health! 💓 Heart health is crucial for overall well-being! 🌟✊🏾Honoring Black History Month: A Celebration of Resilience and Progress 🌟✊🏾

In observance of Black History Month, we pay tribute to the courageous spirit and contributions of African Americans throughout history. The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to Carter G. Woodson, a pioneering scholar who recognized the need to highlight the achievements of Black Americans. His efforts laid the foundation for a month-long celebration dedicated to acknowledging the struggles, triumphs, and legacy of the Black community.

As we commemorate Black History Month, let's reflect on how far we've come and the ongoing journey towards equality and justice. Through prevention work, we honor the resilience and strength of the Black community, striving to create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, unencumbered by the burdens of discrimination.🤝🏾🌍
