Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance

February 2024 Edition

The Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance (MEGA) was created by local governments for local governments. We invite you to find out how MEGA's Power of Partnership can improve your municipal energy procurements and costs.

Energy Market Update:

Warm Temperatures and Strong Supply Keep Natural Gas Prices Low

2023 officially ranks as the warmest year on record for New York City. The exceptional warmth across New York State and the country has continued, with January 2024 ranking as the hottest January ever measured with February 2024 on track to rank as the second warmest February ever. A combination of the abnormally warm weather for the second winter in a row, record natural gas production levels, a surplus of working gas in underground storage, and the pause of future LNG Export permit approvals have pushed the natural gas market pricing to incredibly low levels. Even if producers start to scale back production, current storage levels are high enough to support bearish pricing for the foreseeable future. Lower natural gas pricing should remain throughout 2024. Reach out now to find out how you can take advantage of this market development.

Listening and Learning to Serve You Better

In 1998, MEGA was created by Tompkins and Tioga counties to serve the electricity and natural gas needs of New York’s local governments and school districts. The energy market, and everything around energy, has changed dramatically in the past several years. With an increase in severe weather, a departure from average season weather, and NY's aggressive new carbon reduction goals, the energy needs of our municipal leaders are changing, and MEGA is changing with them.

This month, MEGA is kicking off a series of listening sessions to learn more about the energy information and procurement needs of NY’s local governments as we work to better serve our member municipalities in 2024 and into the future. If you are unable to attend one of our sessions or visit with us at an upcoming conference (see below), you can still participate by filling out this:

MEGA's Mutually Supportive Outreach

The core of MEGA’s mission is to support the local leaders who serve New Yorkers in their communities. Our focus is on getting the most competitive and stable pricing for electricity and natural gas supply, but it extends to providing vetted and credible data to help municipal leaders make better-informed energy decisions.

We also want to support the associations that support our member local governments and their elected and appointed leaders. That’s why MEGA sponsors and exhibits at many of the association conferences that cater to our member local leaders.

We just returned from the successful NYCOM Winter Legislative Meeting in Albany and are looking forward to seeing you at these and other upcoming conferences:

MEGA Holds Annual Organizational Meetings

At the beginning of each year, the Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance (MEGA) holds two meetings to set its annual budget, agenda, and organizational structure. The first will happen this week when the members of MEGA’s corporate board will convene to adopt a budget, elect a board of directors, and hear a state of the market from experts from our technical consultant Energy Next.

The next meeting will be the first quarter meeting of the MEGA Board of Directors. The Board will elect our officers, discuss the latest competitive bidding process, and renew its strategic plan for most effectively serving MEGA’s more than 270 local governments and school districts. This board meeting will take place in conjunction with the NYSAC Legislative Conference in Albany
