Two Florida Atlantic University Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing graduate programs recently earned “Best” status for 2024 by U.S. News & World Report due to their rankings. The college's Online Graduate program is ranked No. 32, and the hybrid Graduate family nurse practitioner concentration is ranked No. 4. The 2024 Best Online Programs methodologies are based on several factors, including engagement, faculty credentials and training, expert opinion and services and technologies provided. Residents of Rural 'Glades' Take a 'Leap of Faith' to Combat Dementia | |

The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) is disproportionately high among rural, racially/ethnically diverse older residents. To address such health disparities in rural underserved populations, researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and collaborators employed an innovative study at the Southern tip of Florida’s Lake Okeechobee. The “Glades” is comprised of four small farming towns with about 50,000 residents who are primarily African American, Hispanic and Afro-Caribbean. With more than 30 churches in the towns of Pahokee and Belle Glade alone, this region provided a good fit for testing their faith-based approach.
Results of the study, published in the journal Aging & Mental Health, showed that referrals and years lived rural were significant and positive predictors of new ADRD treatments, respectively, regardless of participant characteristics. Years living in the Glades and African American and Afro-Caribbean ethnicity were significantly related to higher referral rates following screening for cognitive decline.
“Rural populations are likely to be less informed about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias due to limited access to education, public awareness campaigns and health care as well as limited digital literacy and insufficient access to the internet,” said Lisa K. Faculty, staff, students and supporters gathered to attend the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing's Lamplighter Scholarship Program event on Jan. 24. The annual event ceremony is a meaningful event that symbolizes the students' entry into the nursing profession.
This year, 21 students received $500 in scholarship funding. Since nursing students incur higher costs and fees than average students, the scholarship program was established to help FAU's aspiring nurses achieve their full potential for academic success. View Photos

Raquel Panos, BHS ’99, BSN ’22, Master of Science in Nursing Educator Track student, is wrapping up her final semester at Florida Atlantic University. But before she crosses the stage in May to receive her third diploma from Florida Atlantic, she’s preparing to travel to Guatemala this February with the College of Nursing’s immersive study abroad program for a second time.

Dr. Laurie Martinez (PI) and team were awarded a grant from the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation, Inc. The award is a total of $6,561 over one year. The pilot study is titled "Pet Dogs, Resilience, and Well-being in Military Adolescents." Adolescents in military families face normal teen stressors and unique military challenges such as separation from deployed family member(s), role changes within family dynamics during parental deployment, worry about
deployed parental injury or death, lack of social connections due to high rates of residential
mobility, and stressors of reintegration with return of injured/non-injured military parents(s). The
study aims to explore the potential impact of family pet dogs on resilience and well-being among military-connected adolescents. The study team includes Co-Investigators Dr. Cheryl Krause-Parello and Alicia Gill Rossiter of the University of South Florida's College of Nursing.
Additionally, Dr. Martinez (PI) and her team were awarded a $11,029 grant from the Human
Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) for their pilot study, "The Role of Pet Dogs: Examining
Resilience and Well-being in Military Adolescents." The goal of this study is to examine the
association of resilience and well-being in military adolescents (MAs) who have a pet dog
compared to MAs who do not have a pet dog. The study team includes Dr. Cheryl Krause-Parello (Co-Investigator).

Scott Ford joined the College of Nursing as the Director of Development on Feb. 5. Previously, Ford was President of the Broward Health Foundation (Fort Lauderdale). Prior to Broward Health, for Ford served as Vice President for Development and Marketing at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale. He arrived just hours before Hurricane Irma came ashore and counts it as the most memorable "welcome" he has ever received. Education, health care, the environment and community involvement are Ford's biggest passions. For 21 years, he served in America's national parks and wildlife refuges as a park ranger and emergency medical technician. In 1997, he ran for public office (city council) and was elected.
