All Because of a Bike and a Train

Cathy Geist and Irene Faass met in November 2008. At the time, Cathy was teaching Environmental Science and Biology at Minneapolis College in Downtown, and Irene was visiting Minneapolis from Iowa. Their paths crossed on the Metro Transit Blue Line light rail, where a bike sparked a conversation, a discovery of common interests, and a connection that changed Irene’s life.

Read more on the blog, and watch Cathy and Irene tell the full story below.

Launched by the Federation of American Cyclists in 1956, International Winter Bike To Work Day is celebrated in many countries.

Snowbound states like Colorado, New Hampshire, and Alaska have organized events and group rides.

We Minnesotans, who are experiencing the warmest winter...ever, can’t let them take all of the glory!

Winter Bike to Work Day

Set down the car keys and put on your mittens for Winter Bike To Work Day on Friday, Feb. 9, 2024. Judging from the weather forecast, you won’t have to navigate snowdrifts and ice ruts this year. It’s a great time to give winter cycling a try!

Check out the Move Minneapolis Winter Resources Guide for tips and links on winter riding. Biking to work a few times this winter makes the transition to regular biking in the spring that much easier.

Best Bargain Downtown - Carpool Parking at ABC Ramps Mobility Hub

These days true bargains are hard to come by – especially when it comes to transportation and parking downtown. How about being able to park just steps from the heart of downtown for an entire month for less than the price of a Subway footlong!

Registered carpools can park at the ABC Ramps Mobility Hub for just $20 per month - that's $240 annually that can be split by carpool partners. The cost of a comparable annual parking contract is $1680 - $1920 per vehicle.

Other benefits of carpooling:

  • Free access to EZ-Pass lanes (I-394, I-35W, I-35E)
  • Reserved “carpool parking” spaces in ABC Ramps next to the elevators and skyways
  • Ramp and Ride card that allows free transit on buses or trains in Metro Transit’s Downtown ZoneThere are bus stations within each of the ABC Ramps and the Warehouse District LRT Station
  • Guaranteed Ride Home program for registered carpoolers covers up to $100/year for an Uber, Lyft, or a taxi if one person in the carpool needs to leave in the middle of the day for an unplanned emergency.

Parents bringing children to daycare downtown also counts as a carpool.

Carpooling at the ABC Ramps Mobility Hub reduces congestion, lowers emissions, saves money, and is more fun than driving alone.

People Over Parking Act

“We need our policies to focus more on building housing for people, not more housing for cars.” – Sen. Omar Fateh

Last week, Minnesota State Senator Omar Fateh announced the People Over Parking Act, groundbreaking legislation that would make Minnesota the first state in the country to ban parking minimums. Trend setting on parking reform is nothing new to Minnesota; as far back as 2009, Minneapolis has been leading the country in parking reform, an action that has been cited nationally as contributing to housing availability in the city
