Centennial Time Capsule Ceremony

The Centennial time capsule was sealed during a special dedication ceremony on January 31st. It will be opened in 2073, on the City’s 150th anniversary!

Community members turned in great items such as letters and photos. Staff wrote letters and included Centennial memorabilia. Some items from the 1973 time capsule were also placed back in the capsule.

You can still leave your mark through the Centennial Memorial Walkway surrounding the time capsule.

The new Centennial Memorial Walkway will include Bricks from the People, Businesses, and Departments of the City of South Gate.

You are invited to purchase one of these Bricks and have it engraved and placed in the Centennial Memorial Walkway to commemorate your participation and leave your mark in South Gate for generations to come.

Prices:

• 4”x8” brick for $100

• 8”x8” brick for $200

18 characters per line max (3 lines for 4x8 and 6 lines for 8x8)

You can add a replica, souvenir, or Donor Certificate to your order for you to keep for an additional cost (any keepsakes ordered will be shipped directly to you). You can make your selection at the time of your order.

Once your order is processed, your memorial brick will be shipped to the City to be placed on the Centennial Memorial Walkway in front of City Hall.

Tackling Food Insecurity in

South Gate

Californians send 11.2 billion pounds of food to landfills each year — with a significant portion still fresh enough to be recovered and given to people who are facing food insecurity. To reduce food waste and address this statewide issue, Senate Bill (SB) 1383 requires businesses to donate surplus edible food to food banks, soup kitchens and other food recovery organizations.

Edible food is defined as food intended for people to eat, ranging from prepared and packaged food to produce. This includes food not sold due to its appearance, age, grade or size. All food donations are required to meet the food safety standards set by the California Retail Food Code. By participating in food recovery efforts, businesses can positively impact the lives of thousands of Californians.

With the help of dedicated businesses and residents, California aims to recover 20 percent of edible food that would otherwise be sent to landfills to feed people in need by 2025 .

If you are a resident facing food insecurity or a business looking to donate surplus edible food, check out the following programs!

Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) Upgrade Phase 3 Project

The City owns and operates a water system that services businesses and residents with the exception to those in the Hollydale Area. The water system has over 135 miles of water pipelines with approximately 14,300 water meters serving customers. Water meters are an important component of the water system as they serve to record water consumption to bill customers.

The City Council awarded a construction contract on January 23, 2024, in the amount of $1,267,250, to replace 1,725 water meters with AMR meters. AMR meters automatically upload consumption data to handheld devices. The project is expected to start construction in May 2024 and be completed in October 2024. With the completion of the project, 30% of the water meters will be AMR.

In-Progress Construction of Roadway Project

The City is in the process of constructing several multi-million-dollar projects on major streets such as Garfield Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard, as well as on residential streets. These projects have undergone a design process to ensure they meet all safety criteria as well as State, Federal and local standards.

While construction of projects is “in progress,” it may at times appear that some of the improvements are problematic, for example, giving the appearance that ADA requirements are not met for accessibility. This is caused because of the standard phasing and construction sequencing, which is also sometimes impacted by delivery time of materials. These interim improvements will meet standards when construction is complete.

The City would like to invite you to contact the Public Works Department, Engineering Division at (323) 357-9657 should you notice anything on construction projects that may concern you.
