Introducing New Board Chair

Cathy McAdam

GDABVI is honored to have Cathy McAdam as the new board chair, effective January 2024.

"I am happy to serve on the GDABVI board of directors. Back in 2005-2010, I contracted with the agency to develop a computer training project with our local libraries for the blind. I believe in the power of assistive technology! I’m a long-time disability advocate and worked as a medical social worker at the Rehabilitation institute of Michigan before starting my small business! Now retired, I am an active LION, voting rights advocate, and love to travel!"

Welcome Cathy, and we look forward to your leadership, your positivity and your passion to drive this mission forward.

Did You Know? February is AMD Month

HISTORY OF AMD/LOW VISION AWARENESS MONTH

A.M.D. stands for Age-related Macular Degeneration. It is an illness that is the leading cause of low vision in Americans older than 50 years of age. The part of the eye affected by this disease is the macula, a pigmented, oval-shaped part of the retina. About 5 mm in diameter, it is responsible for the central vision required for driving, reading, and fine detail. Containing a high number of photoreceptor cells that detect light, it is also responsible for high-resolution vision. A.M.D. is a progressive disease that causes retinal cells to slowly die, though it causes no physical pain.

Just because the holidays are over does not mean we do not still wish

GDABVI realizes our times can be challenging, but our mission is to provide services and support that help blind and visually impaired individuals live productive, independent lives with confidence and dignity. Our vision is to help the blind and visually impaired individuals have the tools, technologies, and therapies they need to overcome obstacles that separate them from their dreams. And, sometimes, it takes a village to meet our mission and vision goals and our village is you. Can you help us? GDABVI has created an Amazon Wish List for supplies that are needed for our classes, support groups, social engagements and therapies. If you have a little extra to give, please consider our Amazon Wish List. And, as always, THANK YOU!!

February is Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. Click here to read more.
