LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Maya Mancuso

President, BABC

Northern California

US Business Relationships Manager

Dear Members and Friends of the BABC,

As we welcome the month of February, it’s hard to believe how swiftly 2024 is unfolding. Rest assured, our team at the BABC is preparing an array of exciting programs for the year.

Registration is now open for our much-anticipated annual Funding, Exits, and IPOs” event, set to take place in Menlo Park. Here, a panel of experts will share their insights and predictions on the venture capital landscape for the year ahead.

We are hosting another annual gathering specifically for British Expats. If you are seeking updates on personal matters such as international tax, immigration, banking, credit, or advice on managing UK pensions, this event is for you.

We’re looking forward to the BABC NextGen Emerging Leaders Group hosting their inaugural leadership educational event for 2024.

In May, we’re excited to collaborate once again with the European Chambers of Commerce for the first of three networking events at the Palo Alto office of our Patron Member, Cooley.

The 34th Annual Economic Forecast Luncheon Presented by HSBC was a resounding success at the City Club last week. Thank you to both HSBC and SambaNova for sponsoring the event and to all 100 guests who attended.

Finally, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to all our new and renewing members for their support of the BABC. If you’re considering becoming a member of our vibrant community, we invite you to connect with our Executive Director, Jo Healey. For more details on membership, please visit our website.

With gratitude,

LETTER FROM THE BRITISH CONSUL GENERAL

Tammy Sandhu MBE

HM British Consul- General

San Francisco

Dear Members of the BABC,

The guiding question for me this month has been: Why does the UK-California relationship matter?

My answer: Because together, California and the UK set the global standard across so many critical areas of growth, from tech to climate to quantum. As two of the largest economies in the world, our capacity to address mutual challenges increases exponentially when we share our experience and best practice.

That is exactly why we are here: to strengthen UK-US partnerships that get us closer to solving large-scale problems. This is my underlying purpose and I know it’s something I share with so many of you at the BABC as well.

In January, I had the tremendous privilege to welcome British Ambassador to the United States Dame Karen Pierce DCMG back to San Francisco. We shared with her our incredible achievements both as a Consulate and as a community. The Ambassador met with Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis and spoke with the Editorial Board of the San Francisco Chronicle. Our roster of visitors this month also included the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy for North America, Sir Conor Burns. He met with Secretary Dee Dee Myers of the California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development and advanced our ongoing work towards a Memorandum of Understanding with California on trade and climate. The Trade Envoy’s visit focussed on unlocking new business and investment opportunities in California for British businesses.

This tied in wonderfully with the Department of Business and Trade’s work during JP Morgan Week promoting UK healthcare and life sciences companies. Did you know that the UK’s booming healthcare ecosystem is the number one cluster in Europe, home to one in three biotech start-ups?

We’ll be championing UK business at Photonics West, the largest photonics technology event in the world. By the time you read this, almost forty innovative British photonics companies will have arrived in San Francisco for the conference. Photonics and quantum are incredibly important areas for UK-US collaboration, with shared science and research and a thriving ecosystem of entrepreneurs.

In the meantime, thank you for being an essential part of our community. Keep up to date on our activities and opportunities for involvement via our LinkedIn, Instagram, or Twitter!

All the best,

Tammy Sandhu MBE

Opening Night Thursday, 2/15!

The Mostly British Film Festival, an annual cinematic celebration of English-speaking countries, is back in Vogue, February 15-22, 2024 at the VOGUE THEATER. Founded a decade ago by Ruthe Stein and Jack Bair, this year's festival kicks off with a lively Opening Night Party at 5:30 pm at Presido Kebob, 3277 Sacramento Street. The Festival's centerpieces are highlighted below:

OPENING NIGHT

How to Have Sex

Far from an instructional video, How to Have Sex is a dazzling deeply-imagined coming-of-age feature from British director Molly Manning Walker. Her remarkably self-assured debut– winner of the Un Certain Regard jury prize at Cannes– magically transports the audience back to their teens, a time marked by confusing sexual feelings. Nominated for 13 British Independent Film Awards.

London Leads in Climate Tech, AI Investment

According to London & Partners, London has taken the number one spot in Resonance’s world’s best cities ranking for 2024. The consultancy group’s annual ranking considers qualitative and quantitative data, including GDP and evaluations on social media from locals and visitors. London came first place in two of the three main categories – livability, lovability and prosperity – which are used to calculate an overall score for each city. Resonance has also acknowledged how London’s transport has bounced back since the pandemic, as well as the amount of investment and tourists visiting the city as some reasons for the number one ranking.

BAB Responds to Lord Harrington’s Review into FDI

BritishAmerican Business (BAB) met with UK Investment Minister Lord Johnson in Washington DC in January to offer its response to Lord Harrington’s Review on the UK’s attractiveness for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), on behalf of its members.

BAB’s response, which follows a period of consultation with its members, supports the Review’s recommendations, endorsing a new long-term investment strategy, and highlighting the need for swift and effective implementation for the UK to remain an attractive destination for US investors.

Speaking with Lord Johnson alongside US investors, BAB emphasised the critical role of the broader business environment, urging continuous assessment of the overall cost of doing business in the UK, including tax. BAB also raised the need to avoid unintended discrimination against foreign companies, citing the Digital Services Tax as an example that has had a negative influence on US investor sentiment.
