On January 23, NASW-MO Executive Director, Cassie E. Brown, testified in coalition with mental health professional provider organizations and others in favor of audio-only telehealth, supporting Rep. Melanie Stinnett’s bill, HB 1907 in the House Healthcare Reform Committee.

Brown says, “The mental health professional organizations, including NASW-MO, MOPA, MMHCA, and the Missouri School Psychologists, have begun meeting together regularly to find points of connection in our organizations.” MOPA is the Missouri Psychological Association and MMHCA is the Missouri Mental Health Counselors Association.

Boundaries and the NASW Code of Ethics

Boundaries have different meanings, depending on context. Boundaries may be professional or personal and may overlap. Choosing not to give a personal cell phone number to a client is both a professional and a personal boundary.  Not answering the phone during a client session is a professional boundary. Some boundaries have more flexibility, and some are based on personal decision-making. A boundary may be choosing not to stay at work, after hours, every day because of the pressure to complete more work.  Some boundaries are mandates. The National Association of Social Workers (2021) makes it clear that, “under no circumstance” should a social worker have a romantic or sexual relationship with a client.

THEME OF SOCIAL WORK MONTH 2024: Empowering Social Workers!

Your Inspiration for the Month

The Inspiration of the Month is the astonishing prose-poem “Rosa Parks” by the amazing Black poet Nikki Giovanni (b. 1943). What a read! If you don’t know about the Pullman Porters and their relationship to the Civil Rights movement, read this poem (and click the link). If you think Rosa Parks was “just a tired lady” that day, read this poem. If you want to start your Black History Month off with something that weaves American history together, beating a rhythm like a train on its tracks, read this poem. And by all means, share it!

Chapter Executive Director

One of the neatest things I get to do in my role with NASW is speaking to social work students. It’s an honor. It never fails to be energizing and exciting! And some of the hardest questions I get asked, I get asked by students in our field.

Today, I met with a BSW Policy class at Missouri Western virtually. I discussed NASW-MO’s work in the Capitol. I talked about some of the bills we have supported and opposed, and why. I discussed the importance of policy efforts to the work of social work, our ethics, and to those we serve. The discussion was wonderful! I was asked questions ranging from the importance of the Social Work Compact to how best to prepare to testify before a Committee hearing.
