Trustee Dick Salmon: Focused on

Improving Care

Richard “Dick” Salmon, MD, PhD, a former national medical director at Cigna HealthCare, joined Wheeler’s volunteer board of trustees in January.

Following his retirement in 2022, Salmon sought opportunities to improve health care by sharing his expertise. Recognizing a gap in communication between mental health and primary care providers, he found that Wheeler effectively bridges this divide: utilizing the same electronic health record, the same team, and operating under one roof.

Twenty Years of Building Stronger Families

This month, Wheeler celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Multisystemic Therapy – Building Stronger Families (MST-BSF) program, an intensive home-based behavioral health treatment model developed in 2004-2005. This program addresses issues such as parental substance abuse and child behavioral problems, aiming to strengthen families across Connecticut.

The anniversary event was attended by the three original team clinicians from 20 years ago, as well as current staff. All three of the original clinicians remarked about how the experience had promoted and shaped their clinical skill development.

Elisabeth Cannata, Ph.D., vice president, community-based family services and practice innovation at Wheeler, received recognition from the model developers for her leadership in the creation of MST-BSF, as did DCF.
