February 2025 LWPC Meeting Recap

On February 5th, the LWPC gathered at the Walnut Hills Branch Library for an inspiring discussion on doula services. Despite advancements in medicine, significant racial disparities in maternal and infant health persist nationwide. Ensuring comprehensive, representative care for pregnant individuals is essential in improving birth outcomes. With Medicaid now covering doula care, this evidence-based support has the potential to transform maternal and infant health across Ohio.

Cherished Hearts Doulas, a local organization, provides personalized, wrap-around support throughout pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum. Committed to their clients and to improving birth outcomes for Black mothers, they offer compassionate, hands-on care. Our guest speaker, Jocquelene Pressley, exemplified this dedication firsthand—rushing to a delivery in the middle of our meeting!

February Spotlight

Spotlight:

Scott Dean, MPH

Active Living Coordinator

Scott has dedicated the past 5 years to improving the health and well-being of Cincinnatians as the Active Living Coordinator for the Cincinnati Health Department. His focus lies in identifying and removing barriers that prevent residents from engaging in regular physical activity.

Scott holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from Ohio University and a Master's in Public Health from the University of Cincinnati. After gaining valuable experience in various hospital systems, he recognized the profound impact of proactive community health initiatives. This realization fueled his desire to work directly with individuals and empower them to prioritize their health before the need for medical intervention arises.

Scott is actively collaborating with the Carthage community to enhance walkability through various pedestrian infrastructure projects - including crosswalk striping, street murals, and wayfinding signage. Additionally, he has partnered with Roll Hill School to create a traffic garden, promoting safer and more engaging spaces for students. In the coming months, he will finalize a policy, systems, and environment (PSE) assessment in North Fairmount to further support community well-being.

Driven by a deep passion for his city, Scott strives to give back to Cincinnati and enhance the lives of its residents. His future aspirations include actively contributing to the completion of the Cincinnati Riding or Walking Network (C.R.O.W.N.) and advocating for a safer and more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly transportation infrastructure for all.
