Welcome to the start of a new semester! 

Although I am loving the cold and snow, I am even more excited about getting back to the business of learning and socializing. This is a wonderful time to spend time with people, exploring subjects you care about. We have another uptick in enrollment this term, with a current membership of 420. Seventy-five of you have joined ALL for the first time.

I was on campus for the first day when we launched eight classes, and they all went well. Thank you, coordinators; thank you, members! But should I have been surprised, given our dedicated volunteer army of officers, committee chairs and members, and our most capable office manager Cynthia Jayne? This first week we started 42 classes, five with new coordinators; it was a lot to prepare for! This is on top of the time coordinators spend in creating and refining their materials. As I reflect on it, the whole operation is a wonder to behold. I hope you all enjoyed your first week and that any hiccups were minimal.

Including the second six weeks, we offer over 60 courses. Some 

are full, but many could still take a few more students. As of now, members may sign up for as many additional classes as they like.

Within this newsletter you will find a delightful interview with coordinator and past president Dianne Tattersall, facilitator for many years in our Memoirs program. Peg Crawford has an article on community connection and a healthy heart. It’s a nice complement to those New Year's resolutions so often made. And if you like following ALL in different ways, Joan Freedman has an update on our new media outlets.

A quick shout-out to Maggie French, Pat McKean, Larry Brown, Bill Holcombe, Steve Piontek, Susan Walley, and Jane Ward. These giving and talented people are each coordinating two courses! (Janet Uhlar taught two last semester). Remarkable!

For those wishing to get more involved, we are looking for help with Archiving, Finances, Planning for the Future and a Chair of nominations. If interested, please see Cynthia or send us an email.

One last thing. “The Economist” is both the subject and the title of a popular ALL class. One of the articles we just discussed was titled Time to Hit the Weights? As ALL members, feel welcome to check out the campus gym and workout facilities. They are located in the lower level of the Life Fitness Center, building 10. Although the college website says that you must be a member of the college to use the gym, the last time I was there, I was able to use it just by signing my name. Check it out.

Reflections is a collection of writing and artwork that showcases ALL members’ individual talents in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, photography, and art. For 22 years this annual anthology has been a reflection of memories, insights, humor, and philosophy gathered from the lifelong experiences of you, our generous contributors.

This month the ALL Computer Interest Group will continue its discussion of all things Google!

Please join us on Tuesday, February 18th from 7-8 p.m. on Zoom.

The ALL Computer Group met on January 17th on Zoom and continued their discussion of "All things Google."  

Maggie French presented a step-by-step explanation of creating, saving and sharing a Google Doc. It was very helpful to understand the how's and why's of using the Google suite of applications.

We will continue this discussion of Google on February 18th at 7. We encourage group members to suggest technology topics for future meetings. We are open to all ALL members. If you would like to join our group, please contact  lifelonglearning@capecod.edu.

Dianne Tattersall is a retired secondary English teacher and department chair. Since 2017 Dianne has served as ALL President, ALL Vice President and Chair of the ALL Hospitality Committee. She has taught a variety of writing classes and workshops and has published articles on writing and student leadership.

Many of you have had the pleasure of working with Dianne Tattersall when she served as ALL President, ALL Vice President and ALL Hospitality Chair. Not as many of you have had the pleasure of knowing her as a classmate or of being in the “Memoirs – Lest We Forget” course she has coordinated for many years. 

The common thread that runs through all of these roles is how much she loves being involved with people and creating community. As a high school English teacher for 35 years, she worked with hundreds of students on writing and leadership. She served as advisor to their year book and was a board member of the Massachusetts Student Council Association where she helped organize their annual three- day conference for 1000 members strong. 

By the time she retired to Cape Cod, however, she was ready, as she said, “to enjoy the pleasure of being a follower rather than a leader.” She took many courses, including Memoirs with ALL legacy member Dottie Swanbeck and Great Books with Mary Joyce. The seed for her memoir course was planted many years ago.

It wasn’t long before she was invited to join the ALL Board in 2017.  Leadership roles naturally followed. Dianne never lost her love of teaching, however, and the national Covid lockdown seemed an ideal time for her to broaden her portfolio and offer the ALL community a memoirs course. It was immediately well enrolled and has continued to be so ever since.

Dianne’s memoirs course has always been on Zoom. It is designed as a place for people who have been writing memoirs to continue. New members join every semester, with a class limit to ensure each participant has a chance to share their thoughts and writing. Some members come and go with a core of between five and seven regularly attending. Because the course is on Zoom, there is flexibility for members from as close as New Hampshire and as distant as Florida to participate. At least one class member is housebound.

“I am a person,” Dianne notes, “who gets people to open up. Sometimes I suggest something should be explained more fully. Or perhaps you could shorten the piece into two stories.” She talks of how much she values meeting new people and finding the connections we all share with each other. One class, for example, explored common experiences with the “paper dolls” mentioned in one participant's writing. “We are older,” she continues, “and it is a good time for me to help others, for all of us to find the good things in life, and for each class member to build confidence about themselves and their writing.” 

For Dianne, it always seems to come back to being involved with people and creating community. She will be offering her next session of “Memoirs – Lest We Forget” in the fall of 2025 and welcomes all of you to join her.

Finding Community and Hope:

Our Journey with Cape Cod Mended Hearts

Two years ago, my husband and I embarked on a new life chapter, retiring and moving to beautiful Cape Cod. While the transition was exciting, my husband, Ed, had been living with a heart condition and missed his old support system of family and friends in Boston. As part of our move, we were downsizing into our new, smaller home and Ed decided to sell an old lobster trap on Facebook Marketplace. Little did he know this seemingly simple act would lead to an unexpected and life-changing discovery.

Through this transaction, Ed met David Elworthy, a friendly gentleman who explained he also lived with a heart condition. Their conversation naturally turned to their shared experiences, offering a much-needed sense of connection. David, the Treasurer, and a longtime member of the Cape Cod Mended Hearts, enthusiastically shared information about this great organization which we had no idea existed!

The Cape Cod Mended Hearts is the local chapter of a national non-profit. The parent group was founded 70 years ago specifically to provide hope, support, and encouragement from heart patients to heart patients, and it has been on the Cape since 2003. 

Through local chapters like the one on Cape Cod, they provide invaluable resources:



• Education and Support: Mended Hearts offers a wealth of information on heart conditions, treatment options, and healthy lifestyle choices.

• Peer-to-Peer Support: The organization brings together patients and their families, creating a dedicated support network where individuals can share experiences, offer encouragement, and learn from each other.

• Advocacy: Mended Hearts actively advocates for improved heart health awareness and access to quality cardiac care.

Joining Mended Hearts has been a true blessing for Ed. He has gained valuable insights from other members, connected with a supportive community, and discovered a renewed sense of hope and optimism. He has even become an active member of the Cape Cod chapter as an Accredited Visitor, where he and another member visit folks weekly on the cardiac floor at Cape Cod Hospital to listen to their concerns and offer support and encouragement.

If you or a loved one are living with heart disease, we encourage you to explore the resources offered by Mended Hearts. Meetings are held monthly at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis and can also be attended via Zoom. All are welcome to attend these informational meetings free of charge. Connecting with others who understand your journey can make a profound difference in your well-being.

Those of you who attended ALL pre-pandemic may remember the international film series run by Cindy Pavlos and Lore DeBower of Cape Cod Community College.

Good news! The program has restarted. The films are shown each Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. in the auditorium of the Wilkens Science Center (just behind the Grossman Building where our class are held) on a large screen, with comfortable seating. Then the following Tuesday at 4 p.m. there is a Zoom discussion about the film.

Scams and Frauds: How to protect yourself in a continually evolving space!

Brian Haendiges has an extensive background in financial services and insurance and was the CEO of a company. He has taught business courses for various MBA programs, as well as chess classes at a Lifetime Learning Institute in Virginia. Brian has recently retired to Mashpee and is coordinating "Topics Of Interest In Retirement" the second six weeks of ALL's Spring 2025 session.

The ALL Art Gallery exhibits the works of artists' connection to the Cape Cod Academy for Lifelong Learning. The works of Leslie Healy and Christine Radant are currently on display.

The ALL Art Gallery walls are outside classrooms 106 and 115 and change regularly.
